Tool Maker 2
Builds and sets machining tools in support of operations. Distributes, receives and stores tools, fixtures and other equipment used by operations. Monitors and maintains crib inventory. Required to manufacture a variety of cutting tools using CNC machines, cutter grinder and/or conventional grinding machines, while under supervision. May be required to work with higher grade Tool Makers.
I. Working from shop routers, tool orders, oral and written instructions to plan and perform duties necessary to mount and set various tools, fixtures, tapes and other equipment used on different machines to support operations.
a. Mounts and sets tools in fixtures, holders and/or chuck. Maintains correct diameters, length and type of cutting tool.
b. Use tool setting machines and equipment such as: tool pre-setter, heat shrink and balancer.
c. Routes complete sets of tools, fixtures and/or tapes to appropriate machines.
d. Works corrective action on problems related to tool buildups or tool making.
II. Works from oral and/or written instructions, blueprints and specifications to build, alter and rework a variety of cutting tools using CNC tool and cutter grinder and/or conventional grinding machines under supervision.
a. Determines correct angles, radius and contour to form cutting tools.
b. Sets up templates and operates a wide variety of cutter grinding equipment including CNC tool and cutter grinder.
c. Silver solders and repairs staggered tooth cutters.
III. Uses simple hand tools and precision measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
IV.Visually checks work to assure conformity to standard shop practice and monitor first partmachine runs for proving toolset sequence and numerical control tape.
V.Maintains inventory records and submits tool order lists to replenish supplies. Keeps tools inserviceable condition by sorting and routing them to tool grinding area for repair and/orsharpening. Recommends and requests tool modifications. Stores tapes as required andmaintains electronic database as required.
VI.Consults with numerical control programmers when pre punched tape or machine sequencingmalfunction and recommends to supervision any new, additional or replacement equipmentneeded.
VII.Responsible only for own work.
VIII.Performs other related duties as required.
EDUCATION: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires use of simple math, simple drawings and the use of some measuring instruments.
EXPERIENCE: Requires a minimum of one year machining practice experience to include a minimum six months numerical tape control tool setup and/or control experience. Must successfully complete the Tool Maker 2 checklist within ninety (90) days after entering the classification.
