VMware Software Engineer (Returnship) - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Wichita, Kansas

The Path Forward Return to Work program at VMware is an 18-week paid returnship for experienced professionals returning to the workforce after taking time off for caregiving. The program is open to individuals who have at least 5 years of professional experience and have been out of the paid workforce for at least 2 years to focus on caring for a child or other dependent. We are looking for team members who are passionate about delivering high quality, enterprise software deployed both in SaaS and on-premise and enjoy solving problems related to managing virtual infrastructure and applications. You are familiar with, or willing to learn technologies such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Kubernetes and other. You have the ability to work in an agile manner and have adequate knowledge of software development process in large-scale enterprise product development.

This engineering position will also have the opportunity to work with stakeholders from other teams such as Product Management, User Experience and Information Experience teams ensuring the features we deliver provide customer value.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, or problem you will be responsible for?

With in the vRealize Automation produce you will be working on some of the most customer visible features in our Cloud Templates, Deployments and Service Broker areas of the product.

Product Knowledge:

You will gain deep knowledge of the product you are going to work on. This would involve completion of internal training and hands on labs to get familiar with the entire product, not just the area you will be working in.


You will contribute meaningfully to the design and development of an upcoming feature in a future release, including writing java code, collaborating on code reviews and

Professional Growth:

Over time you will have the opportunity to gain knowledge in technologies you may not have used before or build stronger skills in those areas. You will also have support to focus on what you want from your career both in learning and in project involvement through goal setting and mentorship opportunities.

Success in the Returnship Role: What are the performance goals during the 18 week returnship you will work towards completing?

Success in the role is defined by the ability to consistently create high quality code that addresses the business requirement, and is well tested, performant and maintainable.

  • You will develop a solid understanding of the platform and functionality it supports in the context of the larger platform. This would be demonstrated by your ability to deliver features and fix bugs, proficiency handling production escalations

  • You are actively participating in engineering design and development efforts

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Most of your time will be spent writing high-quality code based on engineering team coding standards that include excellent test coverage using one or more of the following technologies Java, Spring, Clarity, Angular to name a few. You can expect to be the owner and take accountability for the quality of your code. You will need to become very familiar with the market we operate in and problems the product addresses.

  • Work with team to break down requirements and customer use cases into small, detailed end to end deliverables

  • Help design, develop and test high quality features for automating cloud infrastructure and applications

  • Designing and implementing effective automation tests for our CI/CD pipelines

  • Resolve customer issues that relate to areas of the product our teams own

  • Performing code reviews
