Spirit AeroSystems Senior Manager, Innovation Management - Research & Technology in Wichita, Kansas


The Innovation Manager manages the innovations originating across Spirit AeroSystems’ global Research & Technology (R&T) division from disclosure through capture, licensing, and the issuance and maintenance of trade secrets, patents, etc. Comfort interacting with engineers, staff, patent attorneys, joint owners, and licensees (current and potential) is essential for this position.

In addition to the below, the Innovation Manager’s responsibilities include but are not limited to: assessment of innovations, determination of the market value and appropriate intellectual property protection required (e.g., trade secret, patent, etc.); preparation and execution of confidential disclosure agreements; negotiation of terms and preparation of draft license agreements consistent with Spirit’s standard policies for review and signature, and coordination of intellectual property activities of Spirit legal counsel. This leader in the R&T function is expected to grow the Intellectual Property portfolio. The Innovation Manager reports to the Senior Manager, Global Technology Strategy and is a member of the Global Technology Strategy Council.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Coordinate and manage university, consortium, research agency and other relationships regarding Spirit membership and participation in associated innovation efforts and opportunities.

  • Track and report on global contributions to thought leadership by Spirit engineers, leadership, and others as indicators of innovative activities supporting Spirit’s objectives.

  • Work closely with R&T engineers and scientists to forecast invention submission, track technology progress toward invention disclosure, and capture information supporting the invention.

  • Review of new invention disclosures for compliance and completeness, and with technical Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) advising of any missing information or acknowledging receipt of complete disclosures.

  • Manage team who maintain and update Anaqua database with information regarding disclosure and patent application filing.

  • Monitor status of disclosures and patent applications team enters into Anaqua and diary all statutory deadlines.

  • Create and report on intellectual property metrics, to include invention disclosures, patent submission, and trade secret capture.

  • Coordinate with Spirit IP Counsel on intellectual property budget, review and reporting on patent prosecution budget for presentation to leadership.

  • Other duties/functions as assigned by the Senior Manager, Global Technology Strategy.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with six (6) years of experience; or Master’s degree; MBA; or law (JD) and at least four (4) years of related experience.Experience:

  • Relevant experience in commercializing technology, which may include demonstrated experience in entrepreneurship, technology transfer, licensing, or business development in an academic, government, or corporate setting.

  • Experience with intellectual property (patents, copyright, trademark protection); working knowledge of open-source licenses.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of federal, state laws regarding intellectual property. Basic understanding of commercialization processes.

  • Technical background and ability to understand/interpret a wide range of innovations, particularly those applicable to aerospace and manufacturing.

  • Ability to interact effectively in a corporate setting, across disciplines, and with various levels of leadership up to and including the C-Suite executives.

  • Ability to problem solve and work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Possess strong negotiation and marketing skills.

  • Demonstrate strong emotional intelligence.

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks at the same time and under time constraints.

  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and tact while maintaining confidentiality.

  • Independent self-starter with strong work ethic.

    Additional Certifications:

    Must be a US Citizen due to work in and around US Government Programs and Technologies.

    Must be able to obtain security clearance if necessary.
