Job Summary:

Cleans and maintains all buildings and structures of public/non-public, as well as outdoor public spaces, assuring that the facilities are clean and safe. Prepares facilities for events, operates various motorized machines, and stocks supplies while maintaining inventory.

Primary Job Functions -

Assessment of Facilities:

  • Evaluate facilities for identified cleaning requirements and have awareness of items needing custodial care.
  • Prepare facilities for events, such as delivery of additional waste receptacles and cleaning of related restrooms ahead of events.
  • Make decisions on cleaning in facilities based on conservation of the supplies and environmental impact.
  • Form and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, customers, and team participants.
  • Maintain a pleasant demeanor and positive attitude while working under any conditions.

Maintain Facilities

  • Maintain knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment of the custodial trade.
  • Clean all guest access areas including doors, windows, walkways, restrooms, viewing areas, railings, and parking areas.
  • Dust, clean and polish chairs, tables, shelves and other furniture and equipment. Wash windows, walls, woodwork and blinds.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms; replace expendable supplies and paper products.
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop and buff floors. Use care in the cleaning of materials.
  • Operate auto scrubbers, various other motorized floor machines, and wet vac systems (kaivacs).
  • Maintain knowledge of current recycling efforts in facilities; collect and properly disposes of all refuse.
  • Practice discretion in regard to visibility of sensitive documentation.

Inventory Monitoring and Safety

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of custodian care and of necessary safety precautions and PPE.
  • Stock and replenish all supplies for facility cleaning and use.
  • Has good knowledge of hazard communications including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and maintain product identifiers on all products used in facilities.
  • Properly mix cleaning products according to the manufacturers guidance.

Secondary Job Functions (list no more than five)

  • Follow all safety protocols and area SOPs while working near construction or repairs, and around delicate, wild and potentially dangerous animals. Complete required training and safely operate all zoo required equipment for completion of job duties.
  • Use time efficiently to complete assigned tasks. Actively seek ways to streamline processes and stay open to new ideas and approaches.
  • Represent the Zoo and/or Sedgwick County at various offsite events such as regional, national, and international conferences, meetings, community events, outreach programs, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in custodial work or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Valid US drivers license without restrictions.
  • Must be available to work weekends and some evenings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year custodial experience in a public facility.

Working Environment/Conditions

The employee is subject to activities that occur in both inside and outside environmental conditions . The employee is subject to any potential hazards of working in a zoo. The employee is subject to potential hazards of working with and near dangerous animals. The employee may be exposed to zoonotic diseases. Employee must be able to work a schedule that may involve working weekends, holidays, or after regular work shifts.

Physical requirements

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May be required to walk or stand for extended periods of time and do repetitive tasks with few breaks within indoor and outdoor environments. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
