Distinguishing Features of Work


This is guard work maintaining order and assisting citizens at City Hall. Work includes providing security for the facility by screening visitors and deliveries. This position will work under the supervision of senior security personnel and supervisors, but must also work independently and use discretion and judgment in handling situations that arise.


*NOTE: To be considered for this position an extensive criminal history background check including fingerprinting is required and must be returned with no disqualifying information before a job offer is made. You will be asked to provide information to complete this process if selected to continue in the recruiting process.*Security is required to provide screeners, female and male, to accommodate the needs of citizens of the City of Wichita and the hire will based on this requirement. *Position is subject to close at any time


Examples of Work Performed


+ Maintains security and safety of City Hall to protect visitors and employees.


+ Ensures that items are not stolen or removed from City Hall.


+ Maintains the security of the building, grounds, and persons visiting an assigned area.


+ Screens visitors and deliveries to City Hall by use of electronic equipment and physical contact procedures.


+ Plans and executes special custodial work as needed.


+ May administer basic first aid, including CPR.


+ Directs and manages large groups.


+ Uses electronic equipment such as x-ray machines, and hand-held and walk-through metal detectors.


+ Offers assistance to citizens and/or visitors to City Hall, including providing general information, current information about City Hall, giving directions and responding to other questions.

Requirements of Work


+ Some knowledge of security methods and practices


+ Ability to lift up to 20 pounds repeatedly up to a height of 30"


+ Ability to stand and/or walk for up to six hours per day


+ Ability to exercise good judgment and to physically handle unruly individuals


+ Ability to notice and report hazardous and unusual situations


+ Ability to develop and maintain physical alertness and reliability


+ Ability to run and move about quickly


+ Ability to bend or squat frequently for up to six hours daily.


+ Ability to complete a minimum of 32 hours self defense and handcuffing training


+ Ability to change specific work hours as needed, including temporary shift changes.


+ Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public


+ Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing


+ Ability to use an 800 MHZ police radio


+ Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies and to report pertinent details of incidents clearly and accurately


+ Ability to follow oral and written instructions


+ Ability to maintain a friendly and helpful demeanor and resolve conflicts


+ Ability to learn how to use required screening devices


+ Ability to visually scan objects for possible contraband


+ Ability to handle and interact with large groups


+ Ability to wear body armor while on duty


+ An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.


Required Experience and Training


At least one year of security related public contact experience. An equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. Bilingual ability may be preferred or required. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
