Summary

Serves as a federal police officer performing law enforcement duties. Duties include but are not limited to: the suppression of criminal activity, protection of life and property, conducting investigations, apprehension and arrest of law violators, the recovery of stolen or missing property, regulation of non-criminal conduct, and responding to and repelling terrorist acts, active threats, natural disasters, chemical, biological and/or radiologic hazards and all emergency situations.

Responsibilities

Incumbent will work within a mix of jurisdictional arrangements (i.e., exclusive, concurrent and/or proprietorial), ensures compliance with and enforces a full range of Federal, State, County and Municipal laws, ordinances, rules and regulations. Incumbent will have arrest authority and is required to carry a firearm and other departmental issued weapons in the performance of duties.

Certain conditions must be met and maintained to continue employment as a VA Police Officer: 1. Successfully pass the basic police course at the Law Enforcement Training Center. 2. Pass an annual physical and psychiatric examination in accordance with established medical standards. 3. Qualify and maintain semi-annual firearms qualification with assigned firearm

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/02/2018.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Specialized experience:is experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreation environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements:Due to the high rise of our building and surroundings, the work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, running and frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs. May regularly require lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds. May require common physical characteristics and defend and/or subdue against uncooperative/resistive suspects**.

Work Environment:**The incumbent is subject to all types of environmental factors (i.e., excessive heat, cold, rain, and snow). He/she is routinely exposed to toxic fumes, smoke and gas. The incumbent may also come in contact with biological/contaminated material. Due to the geographical location, in a high crime area, the incumbent may encounter individuals armed and unarmed that have or have intentions to commit a criminal act (i.e., auto theft, felony, assaults, narcotic transactions, etc.) The encounter could easily result to violence. Work is performed outside and inside. the incumbent is exposed to stressful situations when responding to a hostile environment. The incumbent could be required to work shifts lasting 12-24 hours without relief in order to meet minimum staffing requirement, especially during an emergency situation or natural disaster.
