This is professional accounting work supervising the control and audit of financial transactions and the maintenance of bookkeeping and accounting records. The employee uses independent judgment to determine appropriate methods for performing the broad accounting functions required and may exercise technical supervision over support staff. Work is subject to internal and external audit. Work is directed and reviewed through the establishment of goals and subsequent evaluation of progress toward goal attainment. Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm - May require some evenings. Examples of Work Performed: Audits and investigates to validate the integrity of accounting records and systems maintained by staff and reports results and recommendations. Reconciles records with controls maintained in the Department of Finance. Analyzes reports and records to determine trends or irregularities and initiates reporting of information to appropriate officials. Supervises and/or participates in the preparation of the revenue and expenditure estimates for the annual budget. Facilitates internal and external audits performed in area of responsibility. Instructs and advises others in technical accounting and bookkeeping problem resolution. Ensures compliance with accounting principles and procedures as set forth by the Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Ensures compliance with applicable funding agency reporting requirements. Prepares complex financial reporting documents. Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle. These are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other related duties may be assigned as needed. Requirements of Work: Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information, including spreadsheet development, using basic mathematical and descriptive statistical operations Ability to design and implement accounting systems Ability to analyze fiscal and accounting records and to prepare financial statements from them Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written form Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, and representatives of other organizations May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace Required Experience and Training: Bachelor's degree in accounting, plus at least two years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
