Distinguishing Features of Work

This is routine civil engineering technical support work performed in the field with survey parties. The employee may work independently on routine assignments, but assistance is available when needed. Specific assignments are received from a supervisor and detailed directions are provided when work is other than routine.

The days and hours for this position: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm\ Bargaining Unit: Service Employee\'s International (SEIU)\ **Employees within the department of division shall be given first consideration**

Examples of Work Performed
  • Acts as a survey party worker;providing construction stakes on street and underground utility projects.
  • Operates survey equipment under direct supervision. Holds a sight or elevation rod, runs one end of measuring chain, carries equipment, stocks the vehicle daily with necessary supplies, drives stakes with a sledge hammer.
  • Operation of GPS equipment, total station, optical level, and data collection systems are possible depending on employee development.
  • Performs routine calculations and drafting.
  • Work assignments require operation of a vehicle. Work also occurs in traffic, as necessary.
  • Operates snow removal equipment during snow operations, as needed.

Requirements of Work
  • Ability to quickly learn work related mathematics and to make computations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to quickly learn to use construction principles and practices, construction materials, tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work in the middle of streets in heavy traffic for up to six hours.
  • Ability to reach up to a height of five feet, stoop down, and twist.
  • Ability to walk a mile or more carrying ten-pound level, stopping every 100 feet.
  • Ability to drive twelve-inch wooden stakes into the ground with eight to twelve pound sledgehammer every 50 feet for distances up to one mile.
  • Ability to see crosshairs on levels and transits.
  • Ability to position surveying instruments and maneuver tacks from belt to stake.
  • Ability to sense approaching traffic while working in streets.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain, climb steps or ladders, and tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated with construction sites.
  • Ability to lean and reach as needed to read and interpret building plans and specifications from a print that may be as large as 36 by 48 inches with information printed as small as twenty characters per inch.
  • Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Six Months of work experience in manual labor, manufacturing, construction, field operations, or transportation is required.
  • One year of experience in construction, drafting, surveying, or maintaining water, sewer, or other utility pipelines is preferred.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
