Newman University Director of Residence Life in Wichita, Kansas

Occupational Summary:

The Director of Residence Life is responsible for the overall administration and supervision of the residence halls, marketing and managing the residence life program, supervising student staff members and coordinating summer conferences. This position ensures the residence hall community is a vibrant and safe environment conducive to study and personal growth, being accessible to students and serving as a role model and educator. Must live on campus; housing and meal plan provided.

Position is full time (40hrs) and works 12 months per year. Paid time off and benefits starting after first 30 days. Approximately 20 days off with pay for observed holidays/breaks with an additional 2 weeks of vacation time accrued per year. Tuition waiver for employee, spouse and eligible dependents after one year of employment.

Work Performed:

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Resident Assistants (RAs) and other student employees.

  • Manage fiscal resources, facility operations, and marketing of NU residence halls, including expenditures for RA programming.

  • Develop and implement a purposeful programming model to enhance community and promote wellness among the residents of all the residence halls.

  • Support Resident Assistant programming through attendance.

  • Oversee the enforcement of university policies and regulations, specifically those for Residence Life, and maintain a physically secure environment.

  • Work cooperatively with all university departments and serve as liaison, working with Food Services, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Security, etc.

  • Serve as chair of the Housing and Meal Plan exception committee.

  • Work with the business and special events staff to coordinate Summer Conference Housing.

  • Prepare and maintain all administrative tasks for the department such as roommate matching, housing assignments, hall rosters, billing, and reports as requested.

  • Assist with Student Affairs activities and professional development.

  • Advise the Residence Hall Association.

  • Meet with residential students to address conduct violations and complete mediation processes.

  • Respond quickly and calmly to all residence hall and campus crises, coordinating with other campus departments as appropriate.

  • Complete all University-required trainings including Title IX and FERPA.

  • Contribute to the overall success of Student Affairs by performing all other duties as assigned and appropriate to the position.

    Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Master’s degree in student personnel or related area strongly preferred.

  • Experience in residence life and/or student leadership.

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and supervisory skills.

  • Ability to develop effective relationships with students, staff and faculty.

  • Experience with staff selection and training.

  • Experience advising student groups.

  • Adaptable and flexible, dealing with a variety of people and work problems daily.

  • Able to analyze many variables and choose an effective course of action.

  • Skilled in providing written and verbal feedback in a professional manner.

  • Must be able to handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.

  • Must be able to actively listen, exam all sides of a matter, and bring issues to a successful conclusion.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

    Housing Information:

    On-campus housing is required. Stand-alone house provided that doubles as Residence Life offices. Washer/dryer, utilities, and internet included. Meal plan covered (only offered when dining hall is open for traditional students, spring/fall semesters).
