The position provides administrative oversight and technical leadership to the Toxicology Lab Manager and the forensic scientists assigned to the Toxicology Laboratory at the Regional Forensic Science Center (RFSC). Toxicology Lab activities include the collection, preservation, and analysis of antemortem and postmortem biological evidence and/or other evidence submitted to the laboratory. Serve as the Center's Chief ToxicologistConsult with Toxicology Laboratory Manager and Forensic Scientists regarding case results and ordered test methods.Respond to basic technical inquiries of toxicology staff.Develop, review and approve technical analytical procedures used in toxicological analyses.Oversee validation studies and applied research activities in support of the Toxicology laboratoryReview investigative and autopsy findings of death cases to determine required toxicological examinations.Perform technical reviews on postmortem and antemortem toxicological casework.Serve as a consultant to Center pathologist in the interpretation of the toxicology findings, to assist in the determination of the cause and manner of death.Provide consultation to out-of-county Coroners regarding toxicological findings.Consult with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and defense attorneys pertaining to the interpretation of toxicological findings, conclusions, and relative impairment.Prepares timely, thorough and accurate reports and analysis.Prepare and give testimony as needed by Federal, State, and City courts.Maintain all appropriate licensures/credentials as required for position as Chief Toxicologist.Provides administrative personnel oversight for the Toxicology LabSupervise the Toxicology Laboratory Manager and Forensic Scientists.Oversee the recruitment and hiring of toxicology staff.Facilitate continuing education and interpretation training for toxicology staff.Ensure the Toxicology Laboratory Manager and Forensic Scientists maintain compliance with applicable certifications.Complete all Toxicology lab employee performance appraisals.Maintain discipline and order with Toxicology laboratory staff in coordination with the Director.Provides administrative budget, policy and technology oversight for the Toxicology LabEnsure maintenance of equipment and supplies inventory.Oversee the physical maintenance and functionality of Toxicology technology and equipment.Routinely review and update Toxicology Laboratory standard operating procedures.Ensure that the Toxicology Laboratory is in compliance with the applicable accreditation guidelines and polices directly related to quality assurance and quality control.Provides Toxicology laboratory needs assessments, cost analysis, and justifications to the Director. Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate Degree from an accredited university in a forensic science discipline, toxicology, chemistry, or pharmacology. Five years of experience in a forensic laboratory performing postmortem analyses, or a medical examiner/coroner office AND two years planning and supervising laboratory activities and staff; court qualified as an expert in toxicology. F-ABFT (Fellow American Board of Forensic Toxicology). Preferred Qualifications: Experience in an accredited facility; e.g. ANAB, NAME or ABFT. Senior level experience in a private sector laboratory or medical facility. Court qualified as an expert in a forensic t oxicology.
