General Work Schedule: PRN half day sessions when needed (0-20 hours per week) Positions Supervised: None POSITION SUMMARY This position works under the direction of the supervising faculty physician(s) to provide medical care for students and staff at the school-based health care clinics. The Nurse Practitioner provides temporary coverage for the clinic when the regular physician or practitioner are unavailable or additional coverage is needed. The Nurse Practitioner manages a caseload of pediatric and adult patients with consultation, collaboration, and medical supervision utilizing the acquired knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and physiology. The Nurse Practitioner exercises independent judgment in performing clinical care including delegated procedures in the clinical settings. The Nurse Practitioner participates in the development of guidelines for health care and serves as a resource for the school and patients through consultation, education, and research at various levels to continuously improve processes and services. The Nurse Practitioner participates in the improvement of operational function of the clinic with the school-based health care team. The Nurse Practitioner establishes communication and respectful relationships with all disciplines and represents the Department of Pediatrics professionally. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Expert knowledge related to advanced clinical nursing practice. Expert clinical skills and problem-solving abilities including understanding and applying nursing principles at the advanced level. Ability to communicate effectively in a collegial relationship with other healthcare providers. Recognizes limitations and consults or refers appropriately. Participates in continuing education related to mental and physical health issues affecting students and staff in a school setting. Utilizes the nursing process in the provision of nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other healthcare providers. Evaluates and orders prescribed treatment plan established by written protocol. Orders and performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Monitors effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. Offer counseling and education to meet patient and/or familys needs. Skilled in identifying and treating mental health issues in clinic with the expectation to participate in continuing education regarding pediatric mental health. Ensures documentation of patient visit supports coding and billing guidelines for each encounter. Understands and follows all Universal Precaution Procedures. Understands and follows all HIPAA and FERPA guidelines and processes to ensure patient confidentiality. Assists in development and maintenance of policy/procedures for school-based health care clinic(s). Participates in education of medical learners as appropriate. Supervises clinical nursing staff, medical and non-medical learners at school-based health clinic(s). Integrates health care within the school system as allowed per policy. APP shall complete all billing and medical records documentation within thirty (30) business days of the patient visit or less time if required by an insurance company, other payor of services, or the hospital or institution at which APP is performing services.
