This job was posted by https://www.kansasworks.com : For more information, please see: https://www.kansasworks.com/ada/r/jobs/11276853 Position SummaryUnder the supervision of the Public Works Director the Sanitation-Landfill Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and operations of the City's Solid Waste Services, which includes the refuse collection service, transfer station, construction and demolition landfill, and recycling center. This position supervises personnel engaged in the collection of residential and commercial waste as well as oversees all residential and commercial waste collection and disposal. Duties include multi-tasking the personnel, equipment, scheduling and overall operations of the Solid Waste Services. Work is performed with considerable independence. The employee is required to possess and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License. A valid Class B Commercial Kansas Driver's License is required after 6 months of employment.Essential Functions-Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals;-Coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; develops work schedules and work assignments; monitors status of work activities; meets/confers with assigned staff to discuss activities, problems, and pertinent information; assists with problem situations and provides technical expertise;-Develops and oversees an operational program designed to meet state and federal compliance guidelines, managing solid waste in compliance with operational manuals (KDHE approved operating plans) and State regulations;-Supervises the scale house operations daily where incoming waste is weighed, fees calculated, collected, and deposited;-Interacts daily with general public and landfill customers, answers questions and complaints from the public concerning solid waste services;-Ensures safety to the public and personnel on landfill property, recycling center and refuse collection routes;-Provides key input in the preparation, administration, implementation, and monitoring of the sanitation-landfill annual budgets;-Determines requirements and specifications for the acquisition of new and replacement equipment for department operations;-Prepares reports and maintains records relating to solid waste services and equipment maintenance;-Ensures compliance with all environmental laws, regulations and facility permits that are applicable to landfill operations;-Educates residents on procedures for collection of bulk trash/garbage/recyclables;-Monitor contracted solid waste hauler performance to assure that all solid waste activities are performed as stipulated in the solid waste contract with the private vendors;-Observes sanitation crews in the field to check for thoroughness, cleanliness and proper and safe use of equipment and procedures;-Attends and participates in quarterly South Central Solid Waste Authority meetings.Marginal Functions-Attends training, professional development and seminars related to essential job functions or future job functions as required;-Attends City Council meetings, as needed, concerning solid waste services;-Performs other duties and responsibilities as required and/or assigned.******************************************************************************************************************************************************Position RequirementsExperience: Some experience in sanitary landfill operations and/or solid waste services/management is preferred.Prefer two years of supervisory, management and/or budgetary experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six (6) months in the position.Education/Licenses: High School diploma or G.E .D. equivalent. College coursework in Business Management, Environmental Science or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License and must maintain an insurable driving record under the City's insurance carrier. A Class B Commercial Driver's License is required within 6 months of employment. Household Hazardous Waste certification must be obtained within 18 months of employment.Technical Skills: Thorough knowledge of street locations and the geographic layout of the city. Thorough knowledge of sanitation policies, practices and procedures. Must be able to learn, comprehend, and apply all city or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with other persons and to communicate effectively and clearly using the English language, both orally and in writing. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Problem Solving: Problem solving is a factor in this position. The employee encounters and resolves problems with e
