Position Title: Paraeducator Deaf/Hard of Hearing (Signing)

Department/Location: Building Assigned

Position Qualification: Classified 9 month (student contact days as determined by BOE)

Reports To: Building Principal/Licensed Staff Member

GENERAL

Provides assistance with basic sign language for students who are hearing impaired to help them participate in the school

environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

? High school diploma or equivalent. Some college hours preferred.

? Willingness to undergo training in basic sign language and relevant skills.

? One year paraeducator experience with increasing levels of responsibility preferred.

? Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.

? Master Teacher Para Educator assessments (in lieu of 60+ college hours/transcript) if assigned to a Title 1 building.

? Good communications skills (written/verbal).

? Ability to perform basic math calculations; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate

group discussions; and solve practical problems.

? Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office software; including the use of Excel spreadsheets and district email.

? Ability to use google drive and google tools.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and school community; and communicate

with diverse groups.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; ability to

deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situation.

? Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain confidentially at all times.

? Must support district mission, goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

? Learn and utilize basic sign language skills to facilitate effective communication with the student.

? Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities related to special education and working with

D/HH students.

? Work closely with the classroom teacher to implement and support Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

? Collaborate with the student, teachers, and other support staff to enhance communication strategies

? Assist with understanding and completing assignments, ensuring comprehension of instructional materials

? Attends a variety of meetings (e.g. staff meetings, workshops, in-services, etc.) for the purposes of receiving and conveying

information related to their role.

? Collaborates with internal and external personnel (e.g. administrators, coaches, public agencies, community members, etc.)

for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and programs for assigned student.

? Listens to speakers with the intent to translate to student in sign language for the purpose of providing information,

instructions, and help to student while modeling established rules for grammar and formality in sign language.

? Maintains a variety of documents, files, and records for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference trail.

? Prepares a variety of documents, reports, and written materials for the purpose of communicating information, providing

written support, developing recommendations, and conveying information.

? Support positive behavior management strategies outlined in the student\'s IEP.

? Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, bullying, etc.) for the purpose of

maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to State Law and school

policies as a mandated reporter.

? Engages in ongoing training and skill development regarding current practices, language changes, and learning sign

language.
