Responsibilities

The Tumor Registry Quality Assurance Specialist receives direction from the Cancer Registry HIM Manager, HIM Sr. Director, and Cancer Committee. Porvides training and direction to Cancer Registry. Works collaboratively wiht Cancer Registry team members and with other allied health staff throughout the organization. When applicable, interacts professionally wiht division or department chairs, physicians, residents, fellows, patients and representatives from teh Alabama Department of Health Services Alabama Cancer Regisry, and American College of Surgeons commission on Cancer, external healthcare organizations, and software vendors.

The Tumor Registry Quality Assurance Specialist participates in the overall planning, policy, and direction setting of the collection, data maintenance, quality control, and data requests related to registry data. Serves as a professional and technical resource on cancer registration methods and registry data integrity both internally and externally with hospitals and other agencies. Assists HIM Manager in updating manuals, preparing epidemiology disease-related data requests and reports, planning and implementing data changes, and preparing, reviewing, and resolving NCDB/Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS) data submission. Provides direction to staff regarding visual editing, record consolidation and resolution, resolving discrepancies identified by various computer edits, and ad hoc review of data and re-abstracting quality control audits. Coordinates training and educational activities and may participate on committees. Participates in panel reviews for new staff and provides feedback for the performance review process as it relates to training and QA.

The Quality Assurance Specialist has demonstrated expertise in data collection and analysis, quality control, and training. Has extensive job knowledge in applying all current and historical coding regulations, policies, and procedures. Demonstrates leadership skills utilizes effective decision-making and problem-solving skills and can effectively teach these concepts to varied audiences.

As time allows, the Quality Assurance Specialist may have opportunities to abstract cases.

Identifies, organizes, maintains, analyzes, abstracts, and follows up the medical record in complex multimedia systems of all patient cases that have been diagnosed as having cancer or certain benign tumors seen at UAB within the guidelines of the applicable state requirements for Alabama and the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). Performs expert data entry utilizing specialized software. Responsible for complete and accurate entry of data for cases of all levels and primary sites, utilizing established quality control methods.

Qualifications

  • Assoicate's Degree or eqivalncy commensurate with established CTR credentials

  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential required

  • Minimum five years of hospital registry experience as a Certified Tumor Registrar

  • Previous experience working wiht an ACoS Approved Cancer Program and/or MNC Cancer Program

  • Expert knowlefe of Medical Coding (ICD-10 and CPT) , ICD-O Coding, American College of Surgeons Standards fo rOncology Registry Engtry (STORE) Manual, Multiple Primary and Histology Manual, AJCC and SEER staging

  • Excellent understanding of coding and abstraction of data, quality control methods, presentation skills and training, data analysis and report writing

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong computer and keyboarding skills, including proficiency with Microsoft applications and internet research

  • Experience with cancer registry software and electronic record systems

  • Strong leadership, organizational and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification preferred

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate must not be subject to employment restrictions from a former employer (such as a non-compete) that would prevent the candidate from performing the job responsibilities as described.
