Summary The Supervisory Pharmacy Technician serves as the technician supervisor for Pharmacy Services and is responsible for the assigned technicians. Responsibilities include participation, oversight, and leadership in the pharmacy, such as filling and dispensing medications, ward stock and crash cart replenishment, repacking of medication for unit dose delivery, filling medications, preparing sterile products, procurement and inventory related to the automated dispensing cabinets. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Patient Care Duties Timely maintenance of all aspects of technician dispensing of inpatient medications including IV's, ward stock, controlled substances, and pharmacy automation devices Timely maintenance of all aspects of technician dispensing of outpatient medications, including controlled substances Ensures all required basic pharmacy monitoring functions are complete including inspections, temperature, and cleaning logs Ensures the proper operation and maintenance of all automated pharmacy equipment. Works with other services to obtain needed repairs in a timely manner Reviews vault reports daily. Verifies the completion of the 72 hour inventories, manages users in the vault point of care cabinet, verifies balance adjustments, destructions, and receipts for controlled substance delivery to ward stock. Investigates and reconciles daily discrepancies Patient care functions require in depth knowledge of computerized prescription records system and pharmacy software operating systems, CMOP dispensing and prescription tracking. Understanding of the VHA formulary process as well as assignment copay is required Perform direct patient care functions where assigned. Assignments may include but are not limited to our outpatient call center, patient aligned care teams, specialty clinics, central pharmacy booth, CBOC telehealth services, inpatient clinical services, domiciliary clinic and kiosk, community living centers, contract nursing homes, and centralized pharmacy dispensing window Must be able to understand, execute, and communicate controlled substance procedures Encourage pharmacy technicians to report actual and/or potential medication errors or adverse events and participate in quality improvement to promote patient safety Administrative/Program Management Coordinates, develops, and oversees the efforts of the assigned technicians in all pharmacy activities Works closely with pharmacy management in establishing overall operational policies and procedures in accordance with Eastern Kansas Hospital Policies and procedures, and VHA handbooks, manuals, directives, and memorandums Identifies and assesses workload volume throughout the day for the purpose of making adjustments designed to meet organizational needs and goals Ensures and documents that all technicians are trained, competent and compliant with all processes. policies, and procedures. Provides positive and constructive feedback to technicians to promote a positive and successful work environment Performs all duties of lower graded technicians, as required Will be always proficient in all pharmacy technician duties and will lead by example in productivity, behavior, attitude, and appearance Requires the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with Veterans, caregivers, providers, and other VHA personnel Follows all policies and procedures relating to medication management safety systems which include but are not limited to High Alert Drugs, Look Alike/Sound Alike Drugs, and use safety of Multi dose dispensing pens Responsible for scheduling, planning, and granting leave Reviews performance appraisals and initial competencies with all technicians. Grade Determinations: Pharmacy Technician GS-9 Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8). AND Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process and input of prescriptions and medication orders or electronic equivalent. Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with other members of the healthcare team, Veterans and external customers. Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students. Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure safe medication distribution. Ability to troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment (ADE) or technology platforms/databases. AND The candidate must demonstrate all the following additional supervisory KSAs: Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders and managers. Ability to utilize staffing methodology principles to determine adequate staffing to coordinate and manage workflow and work activities within pharmacy.
