PAY RANGE: $111,000 - $148,000

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Other hours as required)

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for managing the activities of all personnel within the Operations Technology group and for providing strategic direction to the group as a whole. The Operations Technology group will involve direct management of grid automation, grid standards, and unmanned aircraft systems. Frequent collaboration with and indirect leadership with corporate technology functions (e.g., field communications, networking, grid system support) will be required to move Evergy’s overall technology roadmap forward and ensure operational success. To promote this success, Operations Technology is also a close partner with the field (construction and maintenance), engineering, and system operations and seeks to provide as much value for these operational groups as possible through technology deployment. Specific tasks will involve leading the detailed design and implementation of grid management systems while overseeing deployment of supporting field devices, promoting successful deployment of necessary field communication infrastructure to enable advanced grid operations, overseeing development of distribution construction and service standards, and facilitating continued expansion of Evergy’s unmanned aircraft system program. Executing on these tasks will also include ensuring that appropriate work processes and procedures are created and documented in order to support new / existing technologies. Position will also oversee the creation of technology-related business cases and lead the development / management of budgets related to these technologies. In parallel to technology-focused activities, this position will be responsible for working with other members of the Long-Term Planning team to develop long-term investment priorities and corresponding regulatory strategies for all of Evergy Operations.


Education and Experience Requirements:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (ABET accredited) or related technology field is required. Requires 7-10 years of relevant experience including, project management, operations engineering, supervisory roles, and / or IT roles. Electric utility or similar experience is required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the analysis, design and operation of the electric distribution, substation and transmission delivery systems.

  • Working knowledge of the generation system and potential future technology applications related to these assets.

  • Manage multiple ongoing projects and deliverables to ensure completion dates and budget targets are met or exceeded.

  • Ability to train and develop employees in order to enhance the overall skill level and effectiveness of the Operations Technology group.

  • Possesses strong strategic planning skills and the ability to leverage those skills to complete roadmaps and business cases related to technology projects.

  • Understanding of the regulatory environment and ongoing regulatory / policy initiatives which relate to Operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to respond to multiple demands and rapidly changing priorities.

  • Communicates effectively, both oral and written, in a variety of contexts and with a variety of audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies in a timely fashion and to identify / communicate potential applications of these technologies.

  • Provide engineering / technical support to our internal and external customers.

  • Inspire the Operations Technology group and take on a leadership role in Long-Term Planning.

  • Is diverse, flexible and can take on many different roles.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally within the organization.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Valid driver’s license required.

Working Conditions: Conditions will vary from office to field environments. Some travel may be required.
