Sunrun Sr. Civil Engineer in Topeka, Kansas

OVERVIEW

The Senior Civil Engineer is responsible for reviewing photovoltaic solar system designs for structural integrity and code compliance, and providing structural analysis for a high volume of residential solar projects. Additionally, the Senior Civil Engineer will design and draft repairs/structural upgrades as needed.

In addition to day to day design work, the Senior Civil Engineer will be part of planning and execution of long term solar strategy regarding code language and product research and development. The Senior Civil Engineer will support the project management of engineering initiatives to simplify the engineering process within the Professional Engineering department. They will also support the resolution of systemic issues relating to process quality or AHJ rejections.

This position requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to work across many departments from sales to installation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review and analyze structural integrity for high volume of residential rooftop solar designs

  • Research engineering requirements for PV design and installation best practices.

  • Research PV requirements of new markets.

  • Build standards based on a deep understanding of the intent of various state/board/code intentions and requirements.

  • Design and build software solutions to complex engineering issues

  • Stamp content as a licensed engineer for Sunrun.

  • Expand licenses to additional states Sunrun operates in as needed.

  • Advocate for best practices from an industry perspective (internally and externally).

  • Represent Sunrun in various PV industry code committees and national policy initiatives.

  • Work with and educate AHJs and Building Officials to negotiate unique requirements.

  • Provide Structural Engineering support for PE Team, Site Technicians, Designers, Permit Coordinators, and Installers

  • Provide onsite field inspections and Structural Observations Reports when requested

  • Special Projects as needed (Engineering SOP, New Product Research, etc.)

  • Training & mentorship for other licensed engineers

  • Define and roll out regional engineering policy to drive a better business

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited university.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in residential/commercial civil/structural design required. 2 years of solar experience is preferred.

  • Programming knowledge preferred (Google Suite, Salesforce, Java, Javascript, Python, APIs, VBA, etc.).

  • Hold Professional Engineering licensure in states Sunrun operates in; licensure in multiple states preferred.

  • Excellent knowledge of IEBC, IBC, ASCE, NDS, State Level Building Codes, and PV permitting requirements

  • Collaborate with the Sunrun software development team to program software applications for improved calculations and workflow.

  • Deep understanding of code intentions and permitting initiatives applicable to PV industry

  • Experienced with leading large engineering projects (in responsible charge) that require collaboration of multiple licensed engineers.

  • Experienced understanding of business needs for pragmatic and efficient operations

  • Proven leader with ability to effectively communicate, build relationships, train and development

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Professional appearance and interaction

  • Team mentality is a must!

  • Ability to perform normal office duties

  • Ability to operate office equipment including computers and determine accuracy of work

  • Ability to interact and participate in meetings.

Starting salary/wage for this opportunity:

$78,431.00 to $104,539.00

Other rewards may include annual bonus eligibility, which is based on company and individual performance, short and long term incentives, and program-specific awards.
