This Opportunity

WSP is seeking a Lead Water Resources Engineer to join our Topeka, KS office. The following locations will also be considered: Wichita, KS. This team has an excellent reputation of serving numerous clients in their water resource needs. You will be engaged in exciting projects, ranging from FEMA RiskMap (Risk Mapping, Assessment, and Planning) activities, flood mitigation studies, drainage studies and other similar water resources projects. Our professionals are networked across the WSP organization to collectively provide solutions to complex issues. The successful candidate will work closely with team members in an established engineering consulting firm that includes friendly, hard-working and collaborative professionals. The successful candidate will be expected to manage tasks and projects to successful completion. You will also be expected to review project work and finalize deliverables and reports. You will have the opportunity to market and coordinate with clients. This person can work from our Topeka or Wichita, KS offices or potentially a hybrid schedule within 100 miles.

Your Impact

  • Work with engineers supporting our hydrologic and hydraulic modeling tasks for a variety of water resources projects including dams, levee systems, stormwater systems and watershed & floodplain studies

  • Assist in the analysis and design of flood mitigation projects

  • Convey results and findings by means of oral discussions, written reports and graphic-based presentations.

  • Perform technical reviews of modeling and analysis

  • Mentor and assist with the development of junior engineering staff

  • Project and budget management including resource management and oversight of staff

  • Manage and coordinate project teams, including ensuring the technical quality of deliverables

  • Collaborate and participate in technical discussions with team members

  • Participate in proposal efforts

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Agricultural or Environmental Engineering, with a focus in Water Resources or closely related discipline.

  • 7 to 10 years of relevant post education experience in water resources engineering.

  • Professional Engineer license

  • Project management experience.

  • Strong technical skills regarding hydrologic and hydraulic modeling approaches and commonly used software, such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and PC-SWMM

  • Geographical Information Systems experience such as ESRI ArcGIS, ArcPro, QGIS, etc.

  • Proficient knowledge of water resource engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to environmental permitting and project work-related issues.

  • Well-defined knowledge with Stormwater Management, Drainage, Erosion and Sediment Control, Hydrology & Hydraulics Design, Watershed Studies, Floodplain Delineation, etc.

  • Proficient ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.

  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.

  • Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

  • Adept at coordinating technical matters with public and private groups.

  • Proficient understanding of and well-defined experience with surface water analysis, hydrologic methodologies/models (TR-55, HEC-HMS, etc.), hydraulic models (HEC-RAS, HEC-RAS-2D, HEC-GeoRAS, SRH-2D, etc.), and with ESRI ArcGIS software.

  • Working knowledge of FEMA flood studies, floodplain analysis and hazards analysis.

  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Must pass background check, and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company’s driving (MVR) policy.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
