Stormont-Vail Healthcare Director Benefits and Wellness in Topeka, Kansas


Provides overall administration of Stormont Vail’s Benefits & Wellness programs and functions. This position develops, recommends, and administers comprehensive benefit & wellness plans in order to meet the strategic initiatives of the health system and to attract and retain team members and physicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Oversight of all Benefits & Wellness plans, processes, systems, communication and strategies.

  • Establishes and maintains a collaborative and productive working relationship with the Stormont Vail management team to assure needs are being met at all times, initiating actions to correct if needed.

  • Ensure all assigned functions/processes/activities are compliant with Federal, State and local laws governing these practices.

    Benefits & Wellness:

  • Plans and directs implementation and administration of employee benefit programs such as health insurance, disability insurance, life insurance, 403b plan, 457 plans, defined benefit (frozen), voluntary deductions, FMLA, physician benefits, executive benefits, and other plans according to Stormont Vail policies and applicable federal and state laws and the Accountable Care Act.

  • Prepare communication strategy and plan on all benefit programs. Prepares and presents communication materials to employees and former employees about benefit programs, procedures, changes, and government-mandated disclosures.

  • Works with HRIS team to ensure functionality of the systems. Oversees benefit systems to ensure they support the benefits function.

  • Ensures correct and timely pension calculations are prepared for retirees so that payments can begin as quickly as possible. Ensure that retirees are well educated on payment options, beneficiary options, payment process, etc., so that they can make appropriate decisions.

  • Leads the wellness efforts for the health system including: Workplace wellness efforts in the work environment transitioning Stormont Vail to a healthier workplace. Provides support and connection to the Wellpower program as connected to our team member health insurance plan. Identifies strategies and ensures appropriate communication and implementation of all wellness efforts at Stormont Vail.

  • Stays current with all regulatory requirements related to health, welfare and wellness programs and ensures Stormont Vail Programs remain in compliance. Seeks legal opinions when necessary to reduce risk and exposure.

  • Oversees benefits and wellness team. Selects, trains, orients and manages performance expectations and responsibility.

  • Prepares and submits government-mandated reports including the Form 5500’s, and 1095C’s.

  • Maintains effective and cooperative working relations with benefits staff to ensure continuous quality processes.

  • Ensures appropriate use of Employee Self Service and Manager Self Service to offer automating ways of accessing information.

    Departments’ Finances:

  • Develops, recommends, and monitors budget allocations for department.

  • Utilize LEAN processes to gain efficiencies among the departments.

  • Manages labor and other expenses to maximize efficient services.

    Human Resource Management:

  • Hires, directs, evaluates and disciplines all direct reports and ensures same for all other employees supervised by Director and management team.

  • Ensures effective staff performance evaluation system, provide constructive feedback

  • Maintains appropriate standards for discipline and termination.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Master’s degree in Business (MBA), Human Resources or related field preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources or related field is required. Five years Human Resources management experience required. HRIS knowledge and benefits experience required.

Certificates and Licensure:

Certifications in HR and/or Benefits related areas is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly manages the Benefits & Wellness Manager. Indirectly supervises 2 other staff.
