Nexstar Media Group 9 PM Anchor & Political Show Host in Topeka, Kansas

We are looking for the next anchor of our primetime FOX newscast. This person should also be politically-minded, as they will also spend time in our capitol bureau, and produce and host Inside Kansas Politics, our weekly political show.

The anchor and political show host serves as the primary presenter of news stories and other content for all platforms in a manner that is clear, engaging and meaningful to news consumers. Candidate will be energetic and self-motivated, with demonstrated writing abilities and interviewing skills, must be organized, creative, flexible and able to think on their feet. Prior broadcast experience a must.

  • CROSS-PLATFORM REPORTING

    Candidates must be a strong field reporter with excellent live abilities. Needs to perform duties and make decisions under extreme pressure.

    Produces and presents news stories and other content for all platforms.

    Writes and delivers news stories in a clear and concise manner. Must be an effective writer with good organizational skills.

    Responds to breaking news and other urgent newsrooms situations as required.

    Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas.

    Edits video clips as assigned.

    Writes stories for the website and other eMedia platforms.

    Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites.

    QUALITY CONTROL

    Reviews copy and corrects errors in content, grammar and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines.

    Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.

    Must be able to accept and make changes based on constructive direction and criticism designed to enhance the individual’s performance.

    Must have demonstrated understanding the legal implications of covering the news and/or local stories and report in a responsible manner.

    RESEARCH

    Arranges interviews with people who can provide information about stories

    Must have experience in researching through the internet, must have experience working with a computer-based news system.

    Reviews and evaluates notes taken about event aspects to isolate pertinent facts and details.

    Researches and analyzes background information related to news stories to be able to provide complete and accurate information.

    Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functions.

    TEAM PLAYER

    Must be capable of interacting positively and productively with other employees and people in the community.

    Discusses issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions.

    Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

    Participates in promotional activities including public appearances.

    PRODUCING

    Produces newscasts and communicates clear direction with team members.

    Assists in shooting, writing, copy editing, researching and coordinating news programming and other content.

    Determines a story’s emphasis, length and format, and organizes material accordingly.

    Revises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements

    Requirements & Skills :

    Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.

    Fluency in English.

    Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required.

    Minimum five years’ experience in news reporting or anchoring. (More or less depending on market size.)

    Superior on-air presence.

    Excellent news judgment with an expansive knowledge of local and national current events, history, newsmakers and issues.

    Experience guiding, directing and motivating others.

    Ability to identify the developmental needs of others and to coach, mentor or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge or skills.

    Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.

    Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

    Ability to effectively listen to fully understand problems and communicate with a team to shape a solution.

    Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

    Flexibility to work any shift.
