Summary: This position is based at the Compass Minerals Stilwell, KS facility and has a central role in contributing to both product development and risk mitigation in the early portion of the plant nutrition pipeline. Primary duties include: (a) assess handling and formulation characteristics for discovery compounds – and seek innovative ways to mitigate negative handling or storage characteristics of essential and non-essential plant nutrients, (b) in synchrony with the sales and equipment teams, contribute via a chemistry/engineering perspective in order to trouble shoot and fix handling issues with current portfolio, (c) be an innovation resource to deliver ideas on development of novel value add products and the application of those products at multiple levels in the value chain. Lead internal research projects from discovery to launch, leading and contributing to multiple work streams during the process. Propose and lead new product ideas through the Stage & Gate process. This individual will also provide strategic leadership in the areas of innovation development and overall portfolio strategy.

  • Lead key formulation activities across the innovation team to develop next generation product formulas in the area of plant nutrition, both soil and foliar applied

  • Lead product development efforts for late stage pipeline projects including field protocol development, interface with product management for product launch planning and help to train field sales staff on new products.

  • Interact across global innovation team and provide expertise and guidance to other team members

  • Contribute to overall function of R&D facility by taking on certain safety and training responsibilities for the team

  • Manage the resolution of product or process technical problems. May be required to make direct customer contact.

  • Direct the out-sourcing of investigative efforts related to product and process development.

  • Works with Product Management to evaluate competitive products and customer needs to bring forward new product opportunities. Guide overall portfolio strategy.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • This position requires a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or related field or Master’s Degree with 3-5 years’ experience formulating products for the ag industry.

  • Advanced degree and/or 3-10 years’ experience in the fertilizer industry or agricultural input sector developing formulations will be considered as added value in the selection process. Experience with foliar crop protection and/or adjuvant technology required. Product development experience from discovery to launch is also desired.

  • Strong background and knowledge of formulation chemistry as it relates to the ag industry. Competency in formulation for soil applied, seed applied and foliar applied chemistry required.


  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should be PC proficient and possess the ability to quickly master required computer skills required to function within the Engineering group. Must be proficient in Windows7, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, and statistical packages (ARM)

Communication Skills: Individual needs to have exemplary communication skills to enable successful sharing of knowledge, data and results across a multi-disciplinary team with diverse background. Verbal and well as digital communication skills are key to this individual being
