About the PositionThe Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Planning Department is looking to create an innovative and dynamic team of hardworking, committed individuals with a passion for carrying out community goals. The Planning Department is excited to announce an opportunity for the position of Planning Technician, a key position for producing maps, reviewing applications, double-checking legal descriptions, assembling PowerPoint presentations, and keeping digital records in order. This position ordinarily performs work under the direction of a supervisor, as part of a team, and in coordination with multiple staff. Typical hours of work for this position are 8-5 but special events or projects may require additional hours.About the DepartmentThe Metropolitan Area Planning Department (MAPD) is a consolidated City-County department that provides professional planning services to the City of Wichita and to Sedgwick County. + Zoning and Subdivision Cases: The Planning Department is responsible for administering the City and County processes for zoning changes and platting. This involves accepting applications, providing staff support to the Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission (and sub-committees), distributing public notices, and more. The public meetings for subdivision and zoning cases occur on alternating weeks throughout the year. These meetings are an important civic function, providing opportunities for stakeholders to present thoughts/comments about an application, for the Planning Commission to ask questions, and ultimately for a the Planning Commission to take action.
+ Comprehensive Planning: The Planning Department provides long-range planning for both the County and City. We are currently working on implementation of the Places for People Plan. In June of 2019, the City and County approved the Places for People Plan, which recommends on investment in areas largely established prior to the 1960s. In order to help implement the plan, we are working with community stakeholders to recommend updates to the Unified Zoning Code, creation of a Wichita land bank, and identification of a strategic investment plan to encourage reinvestment in existing neighborhoods.
+ Neighborhood, Area, and Corridor Planning: We assist residents and stakeholders to develop community plans for their neighborhood/corridor/area. These efforts involve many meetings and outreach efforts to help identify challenges, opportunities, and future goals. We assist with developing strategic implementation recommendations to achieve the community goals and to monitor progress.

Examples of Work Performed:
+ Develops graphic and written presentations of planning problems and their solutions.
+ Assists in preparing maps, plats and related charts.
+ Develops layouts and graphic design for reports, posters, brochures and PowerPoint presentations.

Requirements of Work:
+ Knowledge and skill in graphic design and website development.
