GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under supervision; performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, construction and

repair of public works, sanitation, utilities, flood control, and equipment; operates light to heavy duty equipment.

Work varies requiring interpretative judgement within prescribed standards and procedures.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

o Oversees work crews in the absence of supervisors

o Operates and maintains light to heavy duty equipment including tandem trucks and other heavy equipment

o Operates street sweepers, backhoes, front-end loaders, rollers, boom trucks and related equipment; uses a

variety of hand and power tools

o Patches streets; determines repair requirements and calculates pavement materials and quantities

o Loads and hauls equipment, sand and gravel, asphalt and other construction and maintenance materials

o Provides public safety in construction zones in accordance with the MUTCD

o Performs concrete and masonry work

o Assists on the flood control system; services and maintains flood control gates and pumps; makes plumbing

repairs

o Services and performs minor equipment repairs; performs minor welding

o Removes storm debris and snow; places barricades

o Mows and trims trees, grass, weeds and shrubbery; applies pesticides

o Performs overtime as needed and other duties as assigned

SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:

May act as lead worker for new and/or seasonal employees

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:

o High school diploma or G.E.D.

o One (1) year of experience in construction or maintenance work

o Possession of a valid Kansas drivers license

o Preferred possession of a valid Kansas Class B commercial drivers license (CDL) with air brake & tanker

endorsements, or ability to obtain within one (1) year from the start date of employment

The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees and pay hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL training

at Salina Area Technical College.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:

This position has a 40-minute response time by way of the most direct route and within the posted speed limits;

or must live within the city limits of Salina, Bennington, Minneapolis, McPherson, Solomon, Abilene, or

Carneiro.

Work Type: Very heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of

force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
