Job Duties:

The Kansas City National Security Campus is a U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration facility managed and operated by Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technology (FM&T). Our primary business is to manufacture sophisticated mechanical, electrical, and engineered material components for our nation’s defense system. Our goal is to seek innovative solutions that surpass our customers’ expectations. To accomplish this, we research, develop, and deploy some of the most advanced design and manufacturing technologies in use in the United States today.

  • The position being sought is a Senior Mechanical Engineer supporting firing systems and other major electrical assemblies

  • The selected candidate acts as an authority in the field of Opto-Mechanical Engineering

  • Plans, conducts, and coordinates a broad range of complex professional research, development, design, technology, manufacturing, or quality assignments requiring extensive knowledge of advanced techniques and principles and their application to specific project

  • Works under administrative direction only with considerable latitude for unreviewed actions or decisions

  • This position will require both strategic and tactical thinking in order to support challenging technical activities

  • Interaction and partnerships between Program Management, NNSA, design agencies, and most internal departments will be required

  • Technical leadership of and direction for all aspects of opto-mechanical systems and possibly other optical assemblies not only within the assigned project and department, but also on a plant-wide consulting basis

  • Provide technical leadership in the design of lasers, optical assemblies, fiber injection systems and simulation activities; plan and lead engineering laboratory activities in construction of prototype devices; provide feedback and recommendations to design agency counterparts regarding design validation tests

  • Influence laser and optical assembly packaging solutions.

  • Evaluate opportunities for defect prevention.

  • Oversee and lead all assembly and test aspects of engineering laboratory activities.

  • Lead to ensure execution of all activities required to meet design and manufacturing objectives.

  • Lead formulation of solutions to assigned hardware and/or system design problems.

  • Document designs with written theory of operation descriptions and interface design.

  • Participate heavily with the partners in design for manufacturing and design for test techniques.

  • Manage the detailed review of all laser and optical assembly designs.

  • Lead and document failure analysis of all test anomalies.

  • Write, maintain and modify specifications, test procedures and manufacturing drawings.

  • Interface with customers, design agency personnel, suppliers, and internal organizations to resolve design, development, production and acceptance issues.

  • Participate in design reviews as a subject matter expert including presenting material to a group.

  • Lead, direct, influence and/or coordinate the work of major projects with responsibility for project objectives, completion dates, and technical specifications.

  • Influence strategic planning for technical projects of major scope and complexity that significantly impact the business.

  • Provide regular project status updates for customer and management review.

  • Conduct activities in a safe and healthy manner and work in accordance with established HS&E requirements to ensure the protection of employees, the public, and the environment.

  • Take actions necessary to stop work when an unsafe condition or action is identified. Every employee has the right and responsibility to stop work when unsafe conditions or actions are identified.

You Must Have:

  • Six or more years of experience in engineering of products or processes including application of advanced engineering principles and technology related to highly complex technical assignments. Demonstrated experience in project leadership.

  • Ability to apply advanced engineering and analytical concepts and techniques to highly complex technical projects

  • Ability to work without supervision, to provide technical consultation, guidance and to mentor others

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited Engineering program, or a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from an accredited program.

We Value:

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering with opto-mechancial design preferred.

  • Three or more years in a technical leadership role with significant responsibility on a major project

  • Demonstrated background in stockpile weapon component function, processes, and procedures

  • Experience using optical layout, simulation & modeling software such as Zemax and CODE V

  • Experience using mechanical design software such as Creo

  • Demonstrated effective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills

  • Must be skilled at interaction with all levels of management and outside entities
