A mid-level position working in the Environmental Services group in the Kansas City office. The Environmental Planner will provide environmental studies and permitting support for proposed infrastructure projects locally and throughout the Midwest.
Your Key Responsibilities
For a variety of infrastructure projects including, but not limited to, wind and solar energy facilities, transmission lines, oil and gas pipelines and facilities, and transportation infrastructure:
Assist with preparation of environmental impact analyses, public utilities commission applications, siting studies, critical issues analyses, local conditional use permit applications, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, and other environmental planning documents.
Conduct desktop research; read and be able to summarize technical studies, regulatory guidance, and zoning and planning documents on a range of environmental issues.
Conduct or assist with environmental impact analyses; assist with technical documentation; incorporate edits and comments provided during document reviews.
Prepare and distribute agency and public notices (letters, newspaper notices) and prepare written responses to agency and public comments.
Familiarity with a range of environmental planning issues, such as zoning and land use, cultural resources, visual resources, wetlands, plants and wildlife, geology, air, noise, socioeconomics, environmental justice, traffic, and related studies.
Collaborate with geographic information systems (GIS) staff to analyze geospatial data and prepare map figures.
When needed, periodically participate in field surveys.
Continuously improve based on feedback from clients, agencies, project managers, and leadership. Participate in development of best practices.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
Exceptional technical writing skills, reading comprehension skills, and attention to detail.
Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
General understanding of GIS. Experience working with Esri ArcGIS is a plus.
Understanding of federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including NEPA.
Ability to prioritize, stay organized, perform multiple work assignments simultaneously, meet project deadlines, and understand how assigned tasks relate to project goals.
Ability to stay flexible as client needs, scope of work, or project deadlines change.
Should be personable, motivated, and a self-starter capable of working both individually and as part of a team.
Available for periodic travel to support project meetings or project site visits.
Highly proficient with MS Office suite, particularly MS Word.
Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental studies, environmental planning, geography, natural resources, or related field. 3-8 years relevant experience for mid-level.
