Staples Compliance Program Manager in Overland Park, Kansas
Establishes and monitors compliance related to product safety, labeling, claim substantiation, and regulatory compliance. Establishes and administers corporate social compliance standards. Oversees the domestic supply chain network for US and Canada Federal and State/Provincial guidelines. Manages global opportunities as needed.

Ensures the supply chain vendor network is accountable for the specified requirements agreed upon in our Terms and Conditions. Vendors are responsible for mandatory Federal and State regulations.
Supports client specific compliance requirements and reporting needs.

Collects and files test reports from suppliers after reviewing for accuracy. Discusses discrepancies with supplier and may require consult with testing labs, regulatory agencies, and third-party experts.
Supports all departments in daily operations by answering various product safety related inquiries from our internal staff, customers, and suppliers and responds to compliance inquiries in a timely manner.
Offers age grading technical opinions using CPSC guidelines and marketplace comparisons.
Provides marketing and labeling guidance as needed for a variety product types. Examples: CPSIA, FDA/Health Canada, FTC / Canadian Competition Bureau, FCC / Industry Canada, claim substantiation.
Uses independent judgment and experience to provide confident and accurate compliance advice.
Serves as the subject matter expert in daily compliance operations. Consults with the Global Compliance Manager as needed for advice but provides baseline ideas and recommendations for complex compliance situations.
Identifies risks and analyzes to determine if they are product safety or quality issues. Uses independent judgment to distinguish actual hazards vs. minor issues.
Monitors existing and proposed regulations and informs business.
Audits product safety lab reports while noting discrepancies to address with supplier(s).
Ensures vendors are accountable for testing products on a regular basis and informs vendors if they are not meeting our company’s or client’s expectations.
Disseminates test protocols by promotional product categories. Example: toys, bags, drink ware, writing instruments, electronics, etc.
Monitors recalls by government agencies and identify if SPP has purchased the affected products. In the event of a recall, runs item level detailed reports through LINC or WebFocus to identify impacted customers.
Partners with the Global Compliance Manager and Account Services to communicate recall information to our customers. Ensures there’s a sound plan to remedy the recall – return the product, replacement, or refund, etc. Provides guidance and assurance to clients who may contact us regarding a recall.
Interfaces with customers via written, verbal, and onsite meetings. Represents the company in a professional way and demonstrates compliance knowledge to build trust and respect with our clients.
Establishes company regulatory standards, communicates them, and maintains them.
Maintains record retention in accordance with CPSC standards. Maintains and retains lab reports, audit reports and customer specific client records.
Assists Import and Export Logistics with product compliance requirements as requested.

Self-motivated individual who proactively monitors pending regulations and standards, and monitors changes to existing legislation and standards.

The Compliance Program Manager identifies newly implemented standards and applies them to our operations and communicates changes internally to the necessary stakeholders (Procurement, Merchandising, Account Services, etc).
Strive to develop and train our internal staff and supply chain network vendors in the areas of product safety, labeling, marketing substantiation, and social accountability.
Internal & External Customers / Suppliers as well as Third Parties (i.e. include level or job title of customer relationship and the nature of the customer relationship management and service delivery)
Maintain strong communication and partnerships with multiple internal departments: Procurement, Merchandising, Legal, Sales, Logistics, Special Order, Marketing, Operations, In Design Global, and Account Services.
Liaise with high profile clients who may require their own specific product requirements in addition to mandatory regulatory standards.
Liaise with testing labs and social accountability auditing firms.
People Leadership (i.e. staff management; accountability for hiring, coaching, training, conducting performance review, determining pay actions)
The position does not have any direct reports.
The Compliance Program Manager will be expected to participate in internal educational training discussions (example: Lunch & Learn sessions) to internal departments on compliance topics.
Business Strategy (if contributes to business strategy; is position responsible for defining, modifying or executing and is focus on long term (typically 3-5 years) or short- to mid-term (12-18 months))
Able to work independently and manage time effectively.
Make sound judgement as to how & when to communicate regulatory issues to internal and external stakeholders.
The ability to quickly escalate the matter to the Global Compliance Manager to determine the course of action. Reporting incidents to the Global Compliance Manager in a timely fashion since time is of the essence with unsafe products in case a recall is necessary.
Education/Experience Equivalent (minimum requirements)
Bachelor’s degree preferred
In lieu of a degree, 5-7 years of experience in a compliance, quality assurance or supply chain role
Promotional products experience is preferred
Other Skills (e.g. specialized training, language proficiency, functional expertise etc.)
Self-motivated, ability to adapt to change in a fast-paced environment and open to new ideas/concepts

Promotional Products industry experience is a plus.
Product Safety and Corporate Social Responsibility experience a plus.
Familiarity with marketing claims and sustainability claims substantiation a plus.
Proficient with Microsoft Suites (Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel etc.)
