Schuff Steel Co Plant Safety Coordinator in Ottawa, Kansas

Critical to the needs of our facility, the Plant Safety Coordinator is responsible for the daily functions and operations as they pertain to safety management at the plant. Their main objective is to eliminate safety risks through the effective implementation of Company policies pertaining to safety.

Key Performance Objectives:

  • Implements, and coordinates programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and associated financial losses.

  • Conducts root cause analysis.

  • Conducts safety orientation for all new hire employees.

  • Trains employees on site-specific hazards, Lockout/Tagout, overhead cranes operation, rigging, confined space, forklifts, electrical, NFPA 70E, fall protection, aerial lifts and conducts toolbox talks as required.

  • Maintains current and accurate SDS files for all materials on site.

  • Maintains safety compliance within OSHA (in particular; general industry standards and company and client standards).

  • Knowledge in the following areas: PPE, HAZCOM, Confined Space, JHAs, Lockout/Tagout, NFPA 70E, Overhead Cranes, Powered Industrial Trucks, and Machine Guarding

  • Provides technical assistance to supervision on safety-related matters.

  • Maintains liaison with government agencies such as OSHA, DOT, and EPA along with other regulatory agencies.

  • Conducts walk-through inspections of plant facilities, to ensure those plant facilities and other applicable areas are meeting and following required standards.

     

Work Experience/Education

High School Diploma or G.E.D. - Two (2) years of related experience in an industrial, commercial or construction environment.

 

Specialized Skills & Knowledge Certificates & Licenses

  • JHAs, PPE, HAZCOM, Lockout/Tagout, Emergency Response Planning, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, Electrical, NFPA 70E procedures; steel fabrication processes; heavy machine equipment machine guarding and safety controls, Overhead Cranes, Powered Industrial Trucks, and Machine Guarding.

  • Experienced and knowledgeable of OSHA standards, in particular; power tools, machinery safety, confined space, electrical, fall protection, cranes, rigging, walking & working surfaces, and all-around-knowledge of General Industry standards.

  • Must have proficient knowledge of OSHA, ADOSH, Cal-OSHA, EPA, and all other applicable federal, state, and local safety, health, and environmental regulations

     

Software & Technology

The position will require the frequent use of MS Office Suite, Bluebeam PDF, Concur

 

Work Environment

Position requires as many hours as needed to fulfill the daily and weekly obligations required to carry out the job's essential functions. Working long days including evenings and weekends can be required for this position. Position requires periodic out-of-state air/road travel as needed and required. A clean driving record will be required due to required road travel. A current and valid driver's license and proof of acceptable insurance are required. This position requires frequent walk-throughs and continuous presence on the production floor and steel storage yard. Travel time is 25%.

 

The work environment is both Indoors/Outdoors. Must be tolerant to outside heat for excessively long periods. Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods with minimal breaks. Occasional road travel is required as needed. Weekends may be required.
