Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education and/or the Building Principal, the Gifted Teacher provides an educational atmosphere in which students will move toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and psychological growth and maturation in accordance with District philosophy, goals and objectives. The position provides specially designed instruction for students identified according to the KSDE definition of intellectually gifted. The Gifted Teacher provides leadership and coordination for planning, implementation, and assessment of curriculum/instructional initiatives related to improvements in K-12 Gifted Program. Through the implementation of innovative and research best practices, this position ensures the delivery of high quality instructional programming.

Essential Functions:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:

Develops appropriate Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), including determining present levels of performance, measurable annual goals (with benchmarks or short-term objectives).

Collects student performance data and report student progress toward IEP goals.

Supports general education teachers in implementing appropriate enrichment/acceleration strategies.

Schedules and conducts IEP meetings with parents and appropriate school/agency personnel, including understanding and explaining Procedural Safeguards to parents and completion of Matrix of Services, as required.

Participates in Eligibility meetings.

Establishes short and long-range goals based on student needs, District and state curriculum

requirements.

Plans and prepares lessons and strategies which support the School Improvement Plan and District mission and which are meaningful and engaging.

Plans and prepares instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and plans for improvement.

Maintains a positive, organized and safe learning environment.

Manages time, materials and equipment effectively.

Establishes and maintains effective and efficient record keeping procedures.

Assists in enforcement of school rules, administrative regulations and School Board policies.

Develops effective assessment strategies to assist the continuous development of students.

Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of subject matter content.

Applies principles of learning and effective teaching in instructional delivery.

Uses a multimedia approach utilizing a variety of materials and equipment to meet the needs of students.

Uses appropriate strategies and techniques to enhance critical thinking skills in students.

Recognizes overt indicators of student distress or abuse and take appropriate action based on school procedures and law.

Uses appropriate materials, technology and resources to help meet learning needs of all students.

Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.

Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with other professionals, students, parents and the community.

Collaborates with other professionals and parents after recognizing student distress or abuse.

Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment.

Assists others in acquiring skills and knowledge in specific areas of responsibility.

Engages in a continuing quest for personal growth through in-service, classes and study.
