\ \ Research Assistant\ \ Department: 3670010050 Animal Sciences & Industry\ Job no: 516431\ Employment type: Staff Full Time (Unclassified - Term)\ Location: Manhattan, Kansas\ Worksite: On-site requirement\ Categories: Agriculture, Research / Scientific / Grants, Animal Sciences / Livestock\ Pay Grade: 06B\ \ \ About This Role:\ This position will function as part of the KSU Beef Cattle Research Center by conducting research and basic maintenance operations with undergraduate and graduate students related to growing and finishing cattle health and nutrition management.\ \ 60% This position must be able to independently conduct and direct subordinates on specific tasks and ensure that all cattle are fed and water is available. All cattle are evaluated for potential illness, removed if necessary, appropriately treated as per protocol and returned to the correct pen.\ \ This position will ensure that all research data are correctly collected, entered collected, entered into a spreadsheet and summitted for analysis.\ \ 30% This position will ensure that the unit is in compliance with Institutional Care and Use Requirements and oversee the daily care of esophageal, ruminally and/or intestinally fistualted cattle located at the facility.\ This position will be able to communicate with cattle owners as needed and generate invoices in a timely manner.\ \ 10% This position will order feed supplies and process hay in a timely manner, The incumbent may be expected to recruit and interview undergraduate students for labor and mentor their development in skills.\ Why Join Us: Kansas State University offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, paid time off - vacation, sick, and holidays. - B.S. in Animal Sciences or closely related field
\ Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in livestock facility operations and maintenance
- Demonstrated ability to work with cattle and to conduct work in the field for extended periods of time.
- Proficiently with MS Word and Excel
- Working knowledge of light weight, and feedlot cattle health and nutritional management in pen environments
- Mechanical and welding experience
- Heavy Equipment experience
- Basic engine and mechanical maintenance experience
- Experience with feed processing, especially steam flaking of grains
- Experience with feed management, including bunk calls and diet preparation.
