This position is responsible for coordination and implementation of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) grant. The purpose of this community grant program is to address chronic disease risk reduction through evidence-based strategies that impact tobacco use and nutrition.


+ Will follow Chronic Disease Risk Reduction grant requirements and implement action plan.

+ Organize community based programs as indicated by the CDRR plan.

+ Increase the number of tobacco-free policies in settings where people gather (e.g., parks, trails, farmers markets, sports arenas and outdoor work areas).

+ Establish tobacco cessation screening, referral and counseling systems targeting healthcare providers serving women during the perinatal period.

+ Increase KanQuit online enrollment among RCHD clients.

+ Promote the “Brief Tobacco Intervention” web-based training to local providers and RCHD staff

+ Identify and eliminate disparities related to tobacco use and its effects among population groups.

+ Support the Food and Farm Council of Riley County and the City of Manhattan in order to advance policy, system, and environmental changes to support a healthy food system and improved food access

+ Monitors all active functions by data collections and analysis.

+ Collaborates with internal stakeholders and community partners to design and develop initiatives, policy recommendations, and informational materials

+ Work collaboratively with Health Department programs and the Flint Hills Wellness Coalition

+ Collaborates with community partners to build and improve population health in Riley County.

+ Actively participates in policy and environmental change.

+ Write and submit CDRR grant reports in a timely manner. Assists with writing the annual CDRR grant application.

+ Attend the annual Community Health Promotion Summit

+ Other duties may be assigned.


+ Participates in Health Department emergency response efforts as needed.

+ Assists in planning and participation in public health emergency response efforts as needed.

+ Participates in Health Department Quality Improvement projects and Accreditation activities

+ Participates in appropriate training, workshops, and seminars to assure personal professional growth

+ Performs other duties as assigned.


One year of experience is required; three-year’s experience in the field of public health is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education - Required: Bachelor degr ee with an emphasis in public health, kinesiology, nutrition, social work, public policy, or related area, excellent communication skills including writing and presentation, data management skills, proficient in English.

Skills - Demonstrates excellent written communication skills – detailed, succinct, organized written work. Must have ability to understand complex oral and written instruction, ability to speak and write effectively, and ability to give clear, concise instruction orally and in writing, including written reports to local, state and federal offices. Establish and maintain an image of the Health Department to the community that represents service, vitality, and professionalism. Ability to speak other languages helpful, but not required.
