Alamo Group Inc. Welder Trainee in Leavenworth, Kansas

Only participants of Lansing Correctional Work Release Program are eligible.

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, welds metal components together on production floor; fabricates or repairs products according to layouts, blueprints, or work orders, using brazing and a variety of welding equipment.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Maintains welding equipment and makes adjustments on equipment to prepare it to weld different parts or subassembly.

  2. Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.

  3. Performs various simple welding operations (i.e.. pins, knuckles, joints) following blueprint weld symbols with limited supervision.

  4. Moves parts and/or work piece manually, by hoist or forklift and secures work piece in weld fixture or table using clamps and wrenches.

  5. Maintains production quantities, efficiencies and quality on parts welded.

  6. Examines work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straight edges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.

  7. Prepares surfaces to be welded and works with blueprints to verify accuracy of pre-assembled metal components to be welded.

  8. Performs simple measurements using devices or gauges to check work.

  9. Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, cable slings, or may bolt parts in position for welding or riveting. Also performs rework, if necessary.

  10. Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.

  11. May record work order information and inventory transactions.

  12. Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of basic procedures of mig welding.

Knowledge and understanding of basic procedures of voltage and amperage for given requirements.

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.

Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternate conclusions or approaches to problems.

Skilled in the operation of grinders and deburring equipment.

Able to perform standard measurements using a tape measure and other measurement devices.

Able to weld simple assemblies with little supervision; and align parts or work pieces to ensure proper assembly.

Able to read blueprints with weld symbols and specifications.

Able to lift and position fabricated metal parts manually, using a hoist or forklift.

Ability to monitor/assess performance of yourself to make improvements or take corrective actions.

Effectively communicate information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates in written form or in person.

Able to wear personal protective equipment.

Able to work overtime and/or including weekends as production schedules dictate.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED preferred

Previous vocational or manufacturing welding experience preferred.

Work performed in a non-climate controlled metal manufacturing production environment, with frequent standing, twisting, bending, stooping, and climbing in and around metal fabricated parts. Frequent lifting, positioning, pushing and/or pulling of 40 pounds alone and 100> pounds with assistance. Requires sufficient manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate production equipment.
