Job Description:

40% - Retrieve, process, and inventory geologic materials (e.g., conventional core and well cuttings). This may include retrieval and re-stocking of already-archived materials. This involves moving samples, sorting, cleaning, possibly re-boxing, and shelving via forklift or by hand. Samples will be transported by vehicle between core storage facilities. As needed, assist with core lab rock preparation, including sawing, slabbing, polishing, and photographing of samples. This activity will be prioritized and coordinated by the Core Lab Manager (O. Jones) and Associate Director (N. Potter).

20% - Develop prioritized lists (by country) in Excel spreadsheets of wells with .las files for loading to interpretation software. Prioritization will be developed with the KGS Data Manager (K. Bream) and KGS Associate Director (B. Bream) and will be based on a combination of data and materials available (e.g., core, age of well, wireline log suites).

20% - Develop prioritized lists (by country) in Excel spreadsheets of wells with scanned logs for digitizing. Prioritization will be developed with KGS Data Manager (K. Bream), Library Specialist (S. Hendershot), and Associate Director (B. Bream). Prioritization will be based on a combination of scan quality, core availability, well location, well depth, and well log suite.

10% - Database entry work for wells and rock samples.

10% - Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Undergraduate geology student enrolled in an accredited geology program.

  2. Available to work 30-40 hours weekly between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday during the KU summer term.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Coursework in geology or related field or knowledge of Kansas geology.

  2. Experience with forklift and/or willingness to learn.

  3. Experience or coursework with databases, data entry, and scanning.

  4. Experience with power tools such as saw and/or wet saws for cutting rock samples.

  5. Experience with photography.

Position Overview:

The Technical Research Assistant Intern (position located in Lawrence, Kansas) works with the Kansas Geological Survey’s Library/Outreach/Business Operations, Geographic Information Systems and Information Technology, and Energy/Stratigraphy Divisions to inventory, clean, organize, photograph, and slab drill-cores that will be used for future scientific research.

Position Requirements:

  2. Ability to perform physical tasks of the job duties, either with or without reasonable accommodation, to include but not limited to

  3. Stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl

  4. Exposed to dust, dirt and mildew associated with stored geological samples

  5. Frequently lift and move up to 30 pounds, and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds in temperatures affected by extreme outdoor Kansas weather.

  6. Must be comfortable with heights to retrieve boxes of core samples with forklift.
