Job Description:

100% Teach one to four 3-hour or 5-hour courses at the 100-, 200-, 300-, 400-, or 600-level.

  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.

  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.

  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. The lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.

  • Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.

Required Qualifications:

For those hired to teach at the 100- or 200-level:

  1. M.A. in French or related arts or humanities discipline OR two (2) or more years of distinguished teaching experience at the post-secondary level. Distinguished is defined as a lengthy and notable or prominent record of mastery in teaching at an accredited institution, as defined by peer evaluation, course evaluation, and/or supervisor evaluation.

  2. Near native or native command of French.

For those hired to teach at the 300-level or 400-level:

  1. M.A. (or foreign equivalent) plus additional graduate study in French or related arts or humanities discipline;

  2. Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced in evaluations or letters of recommendation;

  3. Near-native or native command of French.

For those hired to teach at the 600-level:

  1. Near-native or native command of French.

  2. PhD in French literature or linguistics OR five (5) or more years of distinguished teaching experience at the post-secondary level. Distinguished is defined as a lengthy and notable or prominent record of mastery in teaching at an accredited institution, as defined by peer evaluation, course evaluation, and/or supervisor evaluation.

  3. Strong interest and demonstrated excellence in teaching, as evidenced by letter of application, letters of recommendation, statement of teaching philosophy, and course evaluations when available.

For those hired to teach 100- or 200-level course(s):

  1. Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest,

  2. Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced in evaluations or letters of recommendation.

For those hired to teach 300-level or 400-level courses:

  1. Ph.D. or A.B.D.,

  2. Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest.

For those hired to teach 600-level courses:

  1. Ability to teach graduate-level language course.

Ability to offer course in French for business at undergraduate level.

Position Overview:

The Department of French & Italian at the University of Kansas seeks individuals qualified to teach part-time to full-time undergraduate and graduate courses in French. The departmental Lecturer pool is renewed every year. We accept applications at any time, and make appointments in mid-to-late spring semester for the following academic year (or at other times when teachers are needed to fill unexpected vacancies). The successful applicant must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.
