Job Description:

40% : Specifies, builds, tests and maintains custom electronic instrumentation. Advises customers on capabilities of proposed components and offers alternative suggestions for obsolete or underperforming parts. Tasks require a thorough knowledge of tools, materials, and techniques. Guides students and instructors on projects in advanced teaching labs and assists with component purchases.

40%: Maintains existing systems, computers, oscilloscopes, power supplies and other electronic equipment found in research and teaching laboratories. Repairs components as needed and seeks out replacements for those which cannot be repaired. In conjunction with Laboratory Technologist, maintains records of electronic equipment on loan to department researchers, as well as those which are assigned to advanced teaching labs each semester.

5%: Attends meetings and produces materials for research collaborations.

5%: Operates soldering station for precision electronic assembly and trains researchers on wire bonding machine for specialized electronic fabrication.

5%: Reviews new developments in electronic circuitry and stays current in the field by keeping abreast of new technology through trade periodicals. Participates in training opportunities to further the Department’s knowledge base.

5%: Maintains records for monthly billing and submits those records for invoice generation. Purchases stock, tools, parts, etc. for specific projects as well as general electronics shop use. Manages electronics shop inventory.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent plus five (5) years of experience in design, construction, and testing of electronic circuits OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, or related field and one year of related experience OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, or related field.

  2. Two (2) years of experience instructing and supervising others in the proper and safe use of electronic devices, as evidenced by work history.

  3. Two (2) years of experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) as evidenced by application materials.

  4. Three (3) years of electrical assembly experience using soldering and wire bonding techniques as evidenced by application materials.

  5. Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Electronics technical training or certification.

  2. One (1) year of supervisory experience.

Position Overview:

The Laboratory Coordinator operates under the direction of the Department chair. The person holding this position supports faculty, staff, and students by designing electronic instrumentation and modifying existing equipment. Operates and maintains a wire-bonding machine for specialized electronics fabrication. Reads periodicals to keep updated with new products and components. Develops appropriate test methods and maintenance procedures.
