Job Description:

65% - Advising/Supervising

  • Supervise and provide leadership, direction, training, and support to the paid student senate staff. May include supervision of other SILC undergraduate or graduate student staff.

  • Works with assigned HR Specialist for hiring process for all Student Senate funded student employees.

  • Serve as the primary advisor for KU Student Senate, attending student group meetings, travel planning, event management, election support, and serving as the staff liaison for the student senate executive committee and finance committee.

  • Collaborates with other Student Senate advisors, attends Student Senate meetings, and provides support to the Student Senate Executive Committee (StudEx) and other campus and community constituents.

  • Assist Student Senate in crafting clear and timely communications and web presence for the KU student community regarding resources and policies.

  • Develop and implement tools for assessing student organization satisfaction with Student Senate and the Student Senate processes.

  • Advises the Equal Opportunity Fund (EOF) Board and provides oversight for the funding process administered on a yearly basis.

  • Assist with Student Senate Elections, both fall and spring, as needed.

  • Provide guidance to Student Senate leadership during the post-election transition process, assisting with personnel interview preparation, participating in interviews as an advisor, and providing consultation on Student Senate Executive Board selection.

  • Assist each new Student Senate administration in understanding each of the various staffing roles to better facilitate the continuity of Student Senate operations.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of Student Senate policies and procedures.

  • Confirm event submission and approval via Rock Chalk Central for student organization events seeking funding from Student Senate.

  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with student organization leaders, advisors, and campus partners to support the roles and responsibilities of advising Student Senate and working with student organizations.

  • Oversee direct outreach to student organization advisors and monthly newsletter.

15% - Student Engagement Strategy/Development

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive student engagement curriculum that supports the mission of SILC with a focus on student leadership development, equity, and access for all.

  • Coordinate annual professional development training for all Student Senate staff and senators through partnerships with appropriate campus partners who are experts in their functional areas, which includes mandatory reporting and student conduct, and campus safety and sexual assault prevention.

  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with campus and community partners in order to support the leadership development of all students.

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance the effectiveness and impact of the Student Senate, focusing on student engagement, advocacy, and representation.

  • Provide specialized support and resources to Student Senate members, facilitating their leadership development and success.

  • Collaborate with Student Senate leadership to identify and address student concerns, needs, and priorities.

  • Assist in the development and execution of initiatives to increase student involvement and participation in the Student Senate.

  • Serve as a resource and advocate for student senate initiatives within the university community.

10% - Assessment and Administration

  • Develop assessment tools to evaluate student needs and measure the achievement of learning outcomes within the Student Senate.

  • Implement evidence-based education and programming, research, and assessment protocols to enhance the effectiveness of Student Senate initiatives.

  • Assess risk management strategies in Student Senate activities and support initiatives to ensure student safety and well-being.

  • Manage administrative and communication functions of Rock Chalk Central, KU's student organization database and platform.

  • Participate in university-related committees and initiatives as assigned, representing the interests and perspectives of the SILC.

10% - SILC Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director in long-range planning of SILC student engagement initiatives.

  • Develop and strengthen meaningful and sustainable relationships with campus partners and stakeholders.

  • Serve on internal SILC committees.

  • Other duties as assigned by SILC Director

Required Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree in Higher Education/Student Personnel, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field; or Bachelor’s plus five years related experience.

  2. Minimum three years of full-time experience working with college students through programs and services. *Two years working as a Graduate Assistant will count towards one year of professional work.

  3. Experience with hiring, evaluating, staff development and training within a post-secondary education setting

  4. Experience with programming budgets, student organization funds, and/or basic accounting experience

  5. Strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

  6. Experience using the Microsoft Office suite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Three years of related experience in the following areas:

  2. Student organizations and/or student engagement programs

  3. Strategic development and project management, with the ability to manage details of multiple projects within firm schedules.

  4. Knowledge of current issues in higher education, risk management policies and procedures, and student development and other theoretical frameworks

  5. Experience working with and demonstrated advocacy for needs of marginalized students.

  6. Experience working independently and using judgement to make autonomous decisions.

  7. Budget management and public relations experience.

  8. Knowledge of policies and procedures of a large university as seen in work experience and application materials.

  9. Experience with advising student government or similar student group.

  10. Experience utilizing social media.

  11. Exceptional leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills as evidence by experience and application materials.

Position Overview:

The University of Kansas' Student Involvement and Leadership Center (SILC) seeks an Assistant Director of Student Senate and Leadership Development. SILC offers co-curricular experiences, mentorship, and resources for leadership development. Responsibilities include coordinating student organizations, leadership education, and supporting Student Senate. The role influences campus-wide leadership initiatives and prioritizes student organization advising, leadership education, and Senate support. Candidates should promote KU's culture and foster a sense of community through social justice, personal growth, and leadership programs.

This position has direct input on strategic planning and actions of campus wide student leadership and engagement initiatives and influences the establishment of goals and priorities for the following functional areas: student organization advising, leadership education, and direct support to Student Senate. The Student Senate is the student component of University Governance, which works to address and develop lasting solutions to issues facing the student body. As the primary advisor to Student Senate, the Assistant Director will provide support to student organizations funded by Student Senate, support the continuity of operations, and assess the level of student organization satisfaction with the Student Senate processes.
