YMCA of Greater Kansas City YMCA of Greater Kansas City Pathways to Health and Success VISTA in Kansas City, Kansas

Conduct data analysis of five Kansas City membership centers and signature outreach programs to understand what is working and what could be improved around aquatics and other program engagement. Recruit and train for YMCA signature programs and services. Observe and assess day-to-day program operation, assess suitability of off-site locations to use for program delivery, and implement communication tools with all partners and stakeholders.

As a result of the VISTA’s service, the YMCA will create a program that will see community members through swim lessons, safety around water education, and skill development to provide a pathway to employment as a YMCA lifeguard. he role of the VISTA will be to develop community partnerships, create a curriculum for this new program, and seek fundraising and development opportunities to ensure that low-income community residents have access to the program. By developing this curriculum and engaging YMCA leadership and staff with resources for ongoing sustainability of instruction and enrollment, this VISTA assignment will address the CNCS priority areas of Healthy Futures and Economic Opportunity. By the end of the assignment, the VISTA also will create tools for measuring program outcomes and assessing community impact. As a result of the VISTA’s service people in the community will have a place to work in high poverty areas and support low income families through education and employment in a safe environment. Program participants will gain life-saving skills, healthy living education, and develop leadership skills through service.
