The Emergency Room Registered Nurse provides general nursing care to patients, contributing to the total patient care program.

Environment:

Clara Barton Hospital is an acute care facility licensed for 23 beds. The Nursing

Department employs approximately 45 staff for its medical/surgical, special care/

post anesthesia recovery unit (PACU), emergency/ treatment area and swing bed unit.

ER personnel must deal frequently with death and dying, crisis situations and provide

immediate care in emergent situations.

Physical Demands:

Requires full range of body motion including handling, lifting and moving patients,

manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Requires standing and walking

for extensive periods of time. Requires occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing

up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal range. Some exposure to

communicable diseases or bodily fluids is possible.

Functions:

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse provides total patient care according to established standards, policies and procedures. ER personnel admit patients to the Emergency Department, assess needs, identify nursing problems and establishes priorities of care needed to return the patient to optimal health and documents the appropriate patient and admission information.

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse makes initial patient contact, observes the patients condition and vital signs, assesses and records observations in the patients chart and relays those findings to the covering provider. This position also assists providers with treatments and procedures during the patient stay. Responsibilities include preparing the patient for examination, obtaining equipment needed for treatment, carrying out ordered treatments, documenting treatments and outcomes and instructing the patient on follow up care/appointments.
