HaysMed RN-Float (Various Shifts) in Hays, Kansas

Under the supervision of the nursing department’s management, the RN assumes the responsibility for the nursing processes of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation needed to deliver safe, evidence based care within their scope of practice. Position provides patient care for the Bone, Joint & Spine Unit along with other ancillary departments to promote excellence in Knee Hip Replacement patient care.

  • Collects and assesses initial and on-going data about the health status of the patient.

  • Initiates and/or revises an individualized plan of care that includes immediate and long-term outcomes for the patient/family and reflects the plan of the entire health care team.

  • Carries out interventions safely and in compliance with policy to facilitate achievement of expected outcomes.

  • Evaluates patient response to intervention/therapy based upon expected outcomes.

  • Provides patient education by explaining procedures, medications and giving instructions at a level the patient can understand; addresses patient’s questions and concerns; verifies patient informed consent when indicated.

  • Documents and communicates all required components of patient care.

  • Provides direct patient care in the inpatient perioperative setting.

  • Reviews hip/knee patient’s preoperative vital signs, level of - consciousness, comfort level, pain level, range of motion, and documentation.

  • Administers proper IV fluids and antibiotics as prescribed by physician.

  • Monitors incision area for infection and use proper aseptic techniques to reduce the risk of infections.

  • Monitors urinary catheter (if one is present) and/or urinary output - Checks oxygen level and monitor post-operative vital signs.

  • Assesses for blood clot prevention measures and administer anti-coagulation drugs as ordered, and check compression devices regularly to help in prevention of blood clots.

  • Provides assistance with mobility in and out of bed, and early - Provides medication and/or use of alternative methods to decrease pain levels; reassess as needed. Educates hip/knee patient on discharge procedures of pain management, medications, incision care, use of assistive devices and follow-up appointments and instructions.

Infection Control: Initial and Ongoing training in dealing with infection control. Trainings could include but are not limited to, blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids and bio hazardous materials as it applies to your daily work environment.

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of Kansas or has work permit from the State Board of Nursing.

  • BLS certification required or must complete BLS certification with in the first two weeks of employment.

  • ACLS required within six months.

  • ACLS required to float into Critical Care areas.

  • Prior knowledge of general nursing theory and practice.

  • Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques involved in performing general nursing services and adapting or modifying standards of nursing practices for care of specific medical cases.

  • Maintains a minimum of 4 hours annually in Knee/Hip education.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of one year experience caring for patients with orthopedic diseases and disorders such as arthritis, bone fractures, broken bones and joint replacements.

  • As of July 1, 2016: Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC), Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR) or six hours of trauma education (pre-approved by the trauma director) within two years of employment.

  • Must maintain current TNCC or TCAR every four years or six hours of trauma education (pre-approved by trauma director) annually.
