The University of Kansas Health System Phlebotomist- (Part-time; 11p-7a) in Hays, Kansas
Collects and prepares specimens for analysis through various procedures including blood draw, finger sticks and swabbing.
Collects blood and various non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum and throat or nasal swabs for laboratory testing with a turnaround time of 30 minutes for stats and two hours for routines while maintaining specimen integrity.
Initials, dates, and times all collections.
Identifies, labels, handles and transports specimens to the lab for testing.
Coordinates the collection of therapeutic drug-monitoring assays with nursing personnel to ensure the proper drug dose to collection time.
Utilizes bar code scanning and verbal communication for patient identifiers.
Completes order entry through the electronic medical record/database.
Assist in the training of phlebotomy student interns and new employees.
Completes EKG training, Stress Technician training, and Holter Monitor training as delegated
Assists patients and staff as needed when job aids or resources are required to enable safe and efficient operation; ensures staff, in areas of responsibility, is using resources efficiently and effectively.
Maintains accurate charging as delegated.
Prepares requisitions and reports for maintenance, biomed, and information technology repairs.
Orders unit supplies to maintain inventory of unit’s equipment stock and supplies. Assists with receiving, distributing, and sorting supplies brought to the unit.

Education/Experience: High school graduate or equivalent. Preferred courses in medical terminology. Preferred six months of medical center experience. Ability to manage stress through effective communication and multi asking. Ability to deal understandingly and tactfully with ill patients and their families; ability to maintain working relationships with Associates. As of October 1, 2017: Education documentation required for CLIA purposes.
Certificates and Licenses: phlebotomy technician certification (PBT) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other regulatory agency equivalent to the ASCP preferred; BLS certification required or must complete BLS certification with in the first two weeks of employment.
