The University of Kansas Health System Med/Surg Nursing Manager (Days; Full-time, Great Bend Campus) in Great Bend, Kansas

Responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care through effective management of the activities of the Medical – Surgical Department. Administers, directs and coordinates activities within the department. Responsible for the recommendation, development and implementation of policies and procedures, and for keeping the Chief Nursing Officer informed of daily operations. Responsible for the direction and evaluation of patient care delivery. Maintains 24-hour staffing of department.

  • Established acute care department when hospital opened in July 2009, building from ground up. Onboarded and oriented approximately 20 staff.

  • At present, directly supervise a department of 48 CNAs, LPNs and RNs

  • Responsible for interviewing, checking references and hiring for open positions

  • Create CNAs and Nursing schedules to assure 24-hour coverage for department

  • Coordinate & assist with daily operations of department

  • Attend weekday, daily huddle and other departmental / supervisor meetings as scheduled

  • Plans and maintains staffing pattern for the department, meeting the patient needs for continuity of care and level of care; ongoing review to determine if over or understaffed

  • Develop / maintain departmental policies and procedures

  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff, modeling professionalism and acting as a role model at all times

  • Ensure that staff delivers care according to standards of practice and organizational policy.

  • Review patient records to analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of the care provided by staff

  • Monitor patient care for quality through daily patient rounding and ongoing review of customer satisfaction scores, and addressing patient concerns as they arise.

  • Develop and administer an annual budget; lead cost efficient and effective operations, analyze and develop plan of correction for any deviation of more than 5% of budget

  • Responsible for ongoing quality/performance improvement processes related to patient care

  • Complete annual performance evaluations for staff and implement plans of correction when needed

  • Counsels employees, develops staff, and when appropriate, utilizes the disciplinary process

  • Maintain required competencies for self and all employees within the department

  • Fosters good public relations for the department and the hospital, internally and externally with all customers.

In addition to responsibilities as Medical Surgical unit Nurse Manager, also serve as Education Coordinator. While limited hours are available to dedicate to this position, these are the current duties performed:

  • Maintenance of certification records required for applicable hospital staff

  • Coordinate & schedule classes to maintain required certifications for hospital staff including BLS, ACLS, PALS and TNCC

  • Maintenance of annual subscription, account and staff roster with ‘Growing Up With Us’ monthly newsletter

  • Serve as facility contact for coordination of nursing student clinicals for area colleges including Barton Community College, Fort Hays State University, Tabor College & Wichita State University

  • Serve as facility contact for the Kansas Board of Regents Nursing Service scholarship program

  • Education and/or Relevant Experience/Qualifications



Credential required:


Certificate, license or registration


· Associate Degree in Nursing required

· 5 years of nursing experience required

· Current & unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas.

  • BLS certification or required within 6 months of hire

  • ACLS certification or required within 6 months of hire

· Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or will obtain bachelor’s degree within 5 years of hire.
