Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Utility Worker II with the Wastewater Department. This position is responsible for the operation of the process equipment, valves, pumps, engines and generators used daily in the operations of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Responsible for cleaning and maintenance upkeep of facilities, grounds, tools, and equipment. Work under direction of Crew leader or Foreman.
Examples of Duties
Operates, maintains and repairs all equipment used in the collection system and/or treatment of wastewater products, to include: pre treatment, primary and secondary treatment, wastewater disinfection and biosolids.
Cleans all equipment on regular basis. Cleans all lift stations, pump stations and vehicles weekly.
Collects data and samples at various locations and maintains logs on all preventative maintenance.
Monitors gauges, meters and control panels. USES chemicals as required by law and maintains logs on the use of the chemicals and the amounts.
Responsible for treating of wastewater at or above the required levels and standards of the clean water act.
Performs daily adjustments in treatment of wastewater to meet required levels and daily inspection of the collection system.
Performs daily work using safe practices and procedures for equipment, chemicals, and chemical hazards as set forth by law and the storing of same.
Basic computer knowledge and skills.
Assigned to rotating shift work and assigned on-call duties on a regular basis.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Some knowledge of the procedures and practices used in wastewater treatment. Some knowledge of chemicals and their usage. Skill in the usage of tools and equipment utilized in the Wastewater Division. Ability to read diagrams, plat maps, and directions. Basic knowledge of computers and computer operation. Ability to understand verbal and written instruction and to follow them. Ability to communicate and work with City employees and the general public.
Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. A Class II certification in Wastewater operator or Collection operator and 2 years of experience as Utility Worker I with the city or another certified wastewater system. A valid, CDL is required within 6 months of employment along with a Kansas driver’s license. Good driving record.
Supplemental Information
Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather and can be indoors and/or outdoors. Outdoor weather may include extreme, moderate, and temperate cold and heat, i.e.; snow, ice, hail, sleet, rain, fog, high and gusting winds, dust. Work may include confined space areas, i.e., ditches, trenches, lift stations, manholes. Indoor work is performed under controlled temperature conditions.
Physical Characteristics: Ability to lift up to 100lbs.; pull, push, stoop, squat, bend, climb, carry, balance, reach, twist, jump, drive, sit, stand, walk, listen, hear, see, write, paint, sweep and wash.
