Description

The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Street Foreman with the Street Department. This position is responsible for assisting the Street Superintendent in the operation, supervision and maintenance of the department work activities including but not limited to streets, alleys, pavement markings and/or signage.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists in preparing division/section budget recommendations.

  • Prepares and maintains inventories, records, and reports.

  • Plans, schedules and supervises work activities of assigned personnel.

  • Trains employees in proper work procedures and equipment operation.

  • Requisitions supplies and materials; recommends equipment purchases for operation.

  • Inspects all excavations according to the City's Standard for Excavation Policy.

  • Responds to public requests for information.

  • Administers and supports a strong, vigorous safety program.

  • Operates any and all equipment pertaining to street and sign maintenance.

  • Applies chemicals related to the department, using proper safety procedures.

  • Prepares for and participates in work activities during snow season as required.

  • Capable of using electric, gas and air powered tools weighing between 5 and 250 lbs.

  • Required "on call" duty, including storm call outs.

  • Subject to the Departments Random Drug/Alcohol testing program.

  • Maintains equipment, vehicles, tools, supplies, facilities, and grounds.

  • Required - Kansas Class B CDL Driver’s License.

  • Performs any other duties as assigned as long as it is non-certified.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to read blueprints, technical reports, and specifications. Assess conformance to specifications and plans. Knowledge of construction procedures and basic engineering design. Knowledge of materials and techniques used in street maintenance and repair. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Ability to plan, supervise, and instruct employees in work activities. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures. Skill in the operation of heavy road equipment in various weather conditions. Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and servicing of heavy equipment. Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in operating equipment. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Ability to perform physical work activities in various weather conditions. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate with City employees and the public verbally and in writing.

Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. Over three years experience in road maintenance and repair or related field or three years experience as a Street Maintenance Worker or an Equipment Operator II with some supervisory experience. Street department experience in municipal government preferred. Valid Kansas Class B CDL Driver's License required or must be able to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL Driver's License within the first six months of employment. Applicant must make available drug testing history and pass drug test.

Supplemental Information

Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions.

Surfaces: Includes, but not limited to dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass and wood.

Physical Characteristics: Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 75 pounds and lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
