POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for administering physical therapy modalities of treatment as supervised by the staff physical therapist. Administers treatments and physical agents as directed by the staff physical therapist, after the physical therapist has evaluated the patient. The PTA assists with restoration of patient functioning to prevent disability following injury, disease, or physical disability. Assists patients to reach their maximum performance and level of functioning, while learning to live within the limits of their capabilities. The PTA participates in operational aspects of the department, maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Participates in all infection control, departmental equipment training, organizational safety, and fire safety programs.

POSITION EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a graduate from a two-year college level program approved by the American Physical Therapy Association. Must have a current licensure or certification as a Physical Therapist Assistant. Must be skilled in the use of each modality with a clear understanding of the indications and contraindications. The Assistant must be able to apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, in the treatments of patients and the positioning of patients with various conditions for different types of treatments. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING. OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED:

Administers active and passive manual therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, and heat, light, sound, water, and electrical modality treatments such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, ultraviolet, infrared, and hot and cold packs. Administers traction to relieve neck and back pain.

Instructs, motivates, and assists patients to learn and improve functional activities such as functional mobility and daily living activities.

Observes patients during treatments and compiles data on patients responses to treatments and progress and reports orally or in writing to Physical Therapist.

Fits patients for, adjusts, and trains patients in use and care of the following, but not limited to orthopedic braces, prostheses, and supportive devices such as crutches, canes, walkers, and wheelchairs.

Confers with members of physical therapy staff and other health team members, individually and in conference, to exchange, discuss, and assess patient information for planning, modifying, and coordinating treatment programs.

Gives orientation to new Physical Therapy Assistants and Rehab Aides.

Assists in giving instructions to Rehab Aides.

Performs clerical duties such as taking inventory, ordering supplies, answering telephone, taking messages, and filling out forms when secretary/tech is unavailable.

Measures patients muscle strength, range of joint motion, length and girth of body parts, and vital signs to determine effects of specific treatments or to assist Physical Therapist to compile data for patient records.

Adheres to facilitys policy on corporate compliance. Attends Corporate Compliance In-service annually.

Maintains ethical conduct as required in the personnel manual and KPTA ethics.

Responsible for providing treatment as directed by the staff physical therapist. Adheres to standards of physical therapy practice.

Ability to observe and evaluate treatment effect, discusses observations with staff physical therapist.

Ability to perform components of an appropriate assessment on all patients as related to the therapy requested and provided and rea sessments as per policy. This includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric patients and the general patient population.

Assists with formulation of a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and assesses effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate, staff physical therapist is apprised of conclusions.

Demonstrates knowledge of physical therapy modalities.

Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.

Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Maintains department cleanliness and safety.

Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.

Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, facility staff and members of the department.

Coordinates and assists with directing patient care to ensure patient\'s needs are met and facility policy is followed.

Maintains records pertinent to personnel and operation of the department.
