Job Description:

Under the administrative supervision of the Public Works Engineer, the Engineering Technician II acts construction inspector, assists in surveying, and as an assistant to the Engineers. Responsibilities include assisting the public and townships with technical questions, inspection of construction activities, preparation of construction and design. The Engineering Technician II exercises independent judgment.

Job Duties:

100% -

Assists customers and townships on general questions, provides information on the telephone, by email, or at the counter.\ Works with townships and cities to coordinate construction activities.\ Assists with making engineering calculations and preparation of construction plans for road and bridge projects, landfill, facilities.\ Checks field construction with plans and specifications.\ Assists survey crew in verifying the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.\ Calculates heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain.\ Prepares and maintains sketches, maps, reports, field notes to describe, work performed.\ Coordinates construction project activities with local units of government, utilities companies, emergency provides, postal service, school systems and the public.\ Inspects asphalt, concrete, grading, road, storm water, bridge projects.\ Keeps diaries and field books, prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, field notes to describe work performed.\ Produces mechanical and computer aided drafting using AutoCAD.\ Serves as project construction manager for road and bridge construction.\ Submits construction reports and test reports.\ Tests materials (i.e., concrete, aggregates, wood products, etc.).\ Maintains and updates filing, mailing, database systems, and records, either manually or using computer-related software to update information.\ Uses software to enter and produce correspondence, logs, reports, tables, and schedules; create maps and analyzes data.\ Performs work in a safe manner.\ Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Engineering Technician II -

Ability to operate all office equipment and all field surveying and testing equipment.\ Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.\ Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.\ Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.\ Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.\ Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.\ Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.\ Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.\ Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.\ Ability to convey and receive detailed or important instructions and information to and from other workers and the general public.\ Knowledge of materials and material testing.\ Knowledge of surveying, drafting, computer aided drafting design and construction methods and management.\ Skill in oral and written communication.
