Purpose: Speech-language pathologist will work with the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team to help resolve communication disorders including the mechanical aspects of speech production, phonation, attention/memory, articulation and language processing that interfere with the individual student\'s ability to derive benefit from the district\'s educational program.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Serve as a resource to staff members and parents in the development of a balanced program for communication.
  • Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language delays/disorders.
  • Participate in development of goals and strategies for educational improvement.
  • Provide any assigned paraprofessional with appropriate direction, supervision and evaluation.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to state and district guidelines.
  • Ensure that all activities adhere to the professional standards.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  • Work effectively with community organizations and outside agencies.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Support the value of an education.
  • Support the mission and philosophy of Derby Public Schools.
  • Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  • Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
  • Occasionally requires the ability to move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend and reach.
  • Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  • Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

General Responsibilities:

  • Conduct an assessment and diagnosis of speech, language, cognitive-communication, oral motor/swallowing skills so that appropriate interventions can be designed.
  • Provide a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of speech/language students.
  • Assist teachers and parents in developing an appropriate individual education plan for students.
  • Ensure that Kansas State Board of Education guidelines for Special Education are met.
  • Participate in the screening, preassessment, identification, placement, follow-up and reviews of students progress.
  • Provide appropriate information to students and families regarding community agencies and services available to them.
  • Collaborate all providers so that the communication system can be implemented or utilized in all aspects of the students day.
  • Assist with public awareness activities that lead to a better understanding of the needs of exceptional children.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with others.
  • Assist teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum adaptations/modifications and appropriate classroom strategies.
  • Maintain an inventory of materials, assessment protocols and supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate, confidential records and provide timely reports.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques related to multimodal communication systems for all identified students.
  • See that school district polices are observed during all activities.
  • Obtain prior approval for all special activities and expenditures.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services and building administrator, which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
