Service Description
Purpose: The AmeriCorps member provides educational support and civic
engagement support for the early childhood and elementary
students in the Derby, Kansas educational community.
Responsible to: AmeriCorps Program Director
Living Allowance: \$1,166 monthly living allowance
Benefits: *Health care benefits free of charge

*Segal AmeriCorps Educational Award of \$6,095 to pay for higher
education expenses or qualified student loans

Qualifications:
1. High School Degree, GED or equivalent.
2. Experience working in schools, tutoring students, or working in an early childhood
setting.
3. Computer literate with experience in using various software, including the
Microsoft Office Suite.
4. Experience volunteering or strong desire to volunteer.
5. Ability to attend after hours and weekend meetings/events is required.
6. Completion of 1700 hours of service (approximately 36 hours a week).
Essential Functions:
1. Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
a. Communicate efficiently with all the members of the school district and
community.
b. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
c. Support the value of an education.
d. Support the philosophy and mission of Derby Public Schools.
e. Comply with all district, Kansas Volunteer Commission (KVC), and National
and Community Service (CNCS) program policies, rules, and regulations.
2. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
a. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
b. Occasionally requires the ability to move, lift, carry, pull or push, stoop,
bend and reach for heavy objects and materials over 25 lbs.
c. Must be able to occasionally work in noisy and/or stressful environments.
d. Requires the ability to handle detail work under pressure and meet
deadlines.
e. Requires the ability to work independently.
f. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
General Responsibilities:
1. Tutor small groups, or individual students in reading, math, or science.
2. Work with students, families, or community member play groups to strengthen the
school skills of birth kindergarten students.
3. Participate in and lead others in completing school-based and community-based
community service projects.
4. Adhere to and administer personnel policies and procedures for staff consistent
with those of CNCS, KVC, and Derby Public Schools.
5. Enhance the total efforts of AmeriCorps and Derby Public Schools through active
involvement with community organizations and other national service programs,
where appropriate.
6. Work in cooperation with Derby Public Schools curriculum department staff,
school administrators, and Derby community organizations to obtain resources for
programs.
7. In conjunction with Derby Public Schools/USD 260 staff, develop and maintain
close coordination and relationships with elementary school sites and volunteer
project sites.
8. Adhere to all district policies, regulations, and rules.
9. Other duties as assigned by the Program Directors which are consistent with the
grant-approved activities.
