OurSpecial EducationParaprofessionals assist the classroom teacher in all areas of need, providing periodic classroom coverage for teachers, and supervising groups of students during non-instruction classroom times and activities, in order to ensure personal, social, and academic success of all students.
A Day in the Life
- Re-teaches and helps students review in various academic areas for the purpose of improving their academic scores.
- Administers appropriate assessments for the purpose of evaluating students progress.
- Serves as the classroom teacher during times when the teacher is unavailable, providing appropriate support and instructional guidance so student learning can continue.
- Supervises groups of students during non-instructional times in order to ensure their safety.
- Sets up the classroom for substitute teachers and serves as a source of information so that student learning continues in an efficient manner in the absence of the teacher.
- Monitors student activities to ensure students are working and getting their instructional needs met.
- Provides one-on-one and/or group instruction to students, at least 70% of the time, in order for them to meet academic expectations and goals.
- Assists in preparing materials for students to use in their instructional endeavors to ensure academic success.
- Grades student work for the purpose of assessing students progress.
- Assists students when they check out materials and/or equipment in order to keep track of these items and ensure proper student use.
- Trains high school volunteers who work with students so they can best meet students needs.
- Maintains confidentiality as appropriate in order to comply with district, state and federal laws.
- Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the effective and efficient functioning of the school.
- Assists with supervision of students during emergency drills in order to ensure student safety.
- Participates in professional development activities in order to be competent when dealing with students.
- Assists with special projects as requested by the classroom teacher and/or supervisor for the purpose of running an efficient school building.
Working Environment
- Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 20% standing, 15% walking, and 5% kneeling, stooping, crouching, lifting, and carrying.
- Exposed to a variety of weather conditions while supervising recess.
- Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required by the Board of Education policies and regulations.
- Must be regularly available and willing to work 40 hours per week, or such other hours as the district determines are necessary or desired.
