Under the supervision of the Section Commander (Lieutenant) and/or designated supervisor, the police officer performs duties in protection of life and property and the preservation of order in Andover. The employee in this position must accept the responsibility to support and promote this organizations mission and comply with its directives. The employee in this position enforces all federal, state, and local laws in accordance with all departmental rules and regulations. Patrol duties include enforcing traffic laws, investigation of crimes and accidents, and providing public assistance. The employee will be required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency conditions. This work involves an element of personal danger.

Job Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities include enforcing all federal, state and local laws and ordinances; taking calls for service; patrolling business districts and residential neighborhoods to deter and detect crime; investigating complaints; citing and/or arresting law violators; following up on pending reports and cases; preparing and/or serving civil law processes; protecting person(s) or property; and securing and protecting prisoners. When not responding to calls for service, department members are expected to use self-directed work time in an efficient manner by self-initiating work on those tasks identified by supervisory personnel as priorities for this job position. Applicants must be able to perform these duties and responsibilities in a race and ethnicity neutral manner.

Performance Measurement:

Minimum qualifications include, high school or GED diploma, 21-years of age at time of appointment, no criminal record, possess a valid Kansas driver\'s license and able to pass, physical agility test, written aptitude test, polygraph, extensive background check, interview board, drug screen, physical and psychological testing.

Must successfully complete training in areas including, but not limited to:

Answering calls and complaints involving automobile accidentsand misdemeanor and felony cases.

Administering first aid, conducting preliminary investigations, gathering evidence, locating witnesses, making arrests, and takingarrestees to jail.

Interviewing persons with complaints or inquiries and making proper disposition or directing them to proper authorities.

Processing evidence, testifying as a witness in court, keeping recordsand making reports.

Using physical force effectively and appropriately.

Using firearms safely and accurately.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Distinguishing Features of Work -This is work training to perform the tasks required of a Police Officer for the City ofAndover in the protection of life and property through enforcement of laws.Employees are responsible for learning local laws and ordinances andAndover Police Department policies and procedures for preventing crime, apprehending criminals, and enforcing laws, and general principles of police work.Training is provided by a variety of instructors.Individual performance is evaluated against established performance standards for written tests, role-play assessment, physical conditioning, and practical application and utilization of law enforcement equipment and methods. As an Andover Police Officer,you would be required to work weekends, holidays night shifts and or day shifts as directed by supervisory staff.

Physical Requirements:

Ability tosuccessfully complete required training within the time allowed.

Ability to accurately discharge a rifle, shotgun, and handgun with both left and right hands.

Ability to learn to subdue a violent and/or uncooperative person by methods requiring physical force.

Ability to run distances up to one- and one-half miles without exhausting self.

Must not be impaired from testifying credibly in a court of law or impaired from swearing to an affidavit.

Ability to distinguish colors accurately.

Ability to drag or carry an average adult person, about 150 pounds, a distance of fifteen yards, away from danger.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to wear body armor while on duty.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.

Ability to operate an automobile and to maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license.

An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
