Position Summary: The City of Abilene Kansas seeks a qualified candidate for a career opportunity as a Firefighter. The positionresponds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires; participates in fire prevention programs, inspection, training activities, maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment and station.

Essential Job Functions:
-Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, officials and the public.
-Perform fire-fighting activities, including operating pumps and related equipment, laying hoses and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
-Responds to medical emergencies, hazardous materials, vehicle accidents and other emergencies with a pumper, ladder, rescue, or support vehicle.
-Performs light and heavy rescue activities, including low-angle rescue, water rescue, auto extrication, CPR and rescue equipment operation
-Maintain and safely operate the equipment.
-Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and grounds.
-Operate radio and other communication equipment.
-Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.
-Perform inspections of buildings and property within the city for possible fire hazards and for fire safety regulations.
Education and Experience:
This is an entry level position, no previous experience is required, some experience is preferred. Completion of high school level education or G.E.D. Certification requirements: NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800. Must possess a valid Kansas Class C drivers license. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment. Firefighter I is required within one year of employment.

Residency requirements:
This position must reside within five miles of the Abilene city limits unless approved by the Fire Chief.
