You will participate in planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, weed whipping, mowing, pulling and hoeing weeds, raking leaves, picking up trash and debris, cleaning sidewalks, mulching, and snow removal by operating various tools and equipment of the trade. Perform plumbing and electrical duties to operate, maintain, repair, and install irrigation systems on campus grounds. Hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-3:30 PM.\ \ The role of the Grounds Maintenance and Landscape Department is to provide a safe, functional and aesthetically pleasing exterior environment for the students, faculty and staff of Kansas State University.\ \ Duties include:

  • Participating in planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, weed whipping, mowing, pulling and hoeing weeds, raking leaves, picking up trash and debris, cleaning sidewalks, mulching, and snow removal by operating various tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Performing plumbing duties to operate, maintain, repair, and install irrigation systems on campus grounds.
  • Performing electrical duties to operate, maintain, repair, and install irrigation systems on campus grounds.
  • Performing minor repairs to tools and equipment in the Grounds Department and provide supervision of student workers and subordinate employees as required.

  • Requires six months of relevant experience. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by a hiring manager. This position is covered by the Kansas Association of Public Employees (KAPE) agreement.

\ Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skill in use and operations of tools, machines and equipment commonly used in plumbing and electrical work at the skilled craft level.
  • 18 months experience in performing irrigation work and institution grounds experience.
  • Ability to write concise, meaningful reports. Perform mathematical computations necessary to make accurate estimates for supplies such as fertilizer, grass seed, flowers and chemicals.
  • Knowledge and ability to use soil testing equipment. Ability to read and make recommendations from soil test results. Thorough knowledge of plant materials and accepted horticulture practices.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, techniques, and tools used in the planting and care of trees, shrubs, grasses, and plants. Knowledge of the hazards, proper use and effects insecticides and herbicides.
  • Six months experience in equipment operation. High school graduate of equivalent.
  • Training at post secondary institution in nursery management, landscape horticulture, agronomy, horticulture, forestry, or plant pathology and knowledge of all phases of horticultural practices preferred. Arborist training and experience in utilizing landscape plans and blueprint reading would be beneficial.
